New York, New York . . . The Big Apple . . . The City That Never Sleeps . . . New York is understandably on everyone's must do list . . . again and again.
new york
alive & kicking
Yellow cabs bright lights, shadows of skyscrapers falling silently on streets dwarfed below, neon lights shouting for attention on Broadway, sleek shops on Fifth Avenue, NYPD policeman identical in their smart dark uniforms, electronic billboards brightly buzzing at a mesmerising pace on Times Square . . . the sights, smells, sounds, scenes, all so familiar that even a first time visitor has a sensation of déjà vu, this is the one and only New York City. Come and experience it all!
in a word
First named New York by the British in 1664, this has evolved into one of the world's truly great cities: cosmopolitan, vibrant and the financial city of the world. On the north east coast near the mouth of the Hudson River, New York is made up of five boroughs, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, the Bronx and Brooklyn. Its bright lights and promises draw people from all corners of the world, some permanently, others more fleetingly for a visit. The result is a heady mix of cultures, languages, theatre, arts, music and food, richly diverse and unnervingly absorbing. New York offers a world of experiences in one city. Manhattan, in many people's minds, is New York. It appears that every part of New York has something to offer an inquisitive visitor, but compact at just 13 miles long and two miles wide at the heart of the city, Manhattan seems blessed with an almost unfair share of sightseeing jewels: the Rockefeller Center, Radio Music Hall, Fifth Avenue, Times Square, Broadway, Grand Central Station, the New York Library and the Empire State Building. The opportunities go on and on in what is one of the most exciting, satisfying and exhausting cities in the world!
