An enchanting journey through the `Island State', experiencing Tasmania's unique wilderness, heritage and scenery.
DAY 4 DAY 10
Head south down the beautiful east coast to Hobart (approx. 2½ hours), maybe continuing to the Tasman Peninsula and historic Port Arthur. Head back to Hobart and perhaps enjoy dinner at one of the many seafood restaurants on the waterfront. Overnight at Lenna of Hobart (p103).

Depart Strahan and travel north to Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair National Park (approx. 2 hours). Covering some of Tasmania's highest country, the park has many beautiful lakes and mountain peaks with spectacular alpine scenery. Stay for two nights at Cradle Mountain Lodge (p104), which allows for time to experience one or more of the many walks available.
DAY 11
You may choose to extend your stay in Hobart or to fly out and continue your Australian adventure. NEED TO KNOW... DAY 6
From Cradle Mountain, head north east towards Launceston, Australia's third oldest city (approx. 1½ hours). Make time to visit Launceston's excellent Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, home to exhibitions on the island's Aboriginal inhabitants, Tasmania fauna and stories of Tasmania's migration history. Stay for two nights at City Park Grand Hotel.
DAY 1
Arrive in Hobart and collect your car. Enjoy the rest of the day to explore this historic city, with its wealth of well preserved old buildings. Overnight at Lenna of Hobart (p103).
DAY 8
Head east to Swansea, passing beautiful beaches, granite outcrops and deserted coves (approx. 2½ hours). Swansea offers superb views across to Freycinet Peninsula, and is a great base from which to discover Freycinet National Park. The park is home to white sandy beaches, secluded coves, rocky cliffs and excellent walking. Be sure to head to the Wineglass Bay lookout for breathtaking views. Stay for two nights at Meredith House.
DAY 2
Leaving Hobart, head northwest to Strahan, passing awe-inspiring mountains, tranquil lakes, dense rainforest and a notoriously treacherous coast (approx. 3¾ hours). Located on Macquarie Harbour, Strahan's appeal lies in the historical and natural attractions nearby. Stay for two nights at Franklin Manor.
