victoria
historic & cosmopolitan
Hugging the tip of Australia's east coast, Victoria is the country's second smallest state covering roughly the same area as the British Isles. Packed into such a compact area is a wealth of diverse regional areas and attractions from history and heritage to breathtaking scenery, award-winning wineries, fresh local produce, seaside villages, fascinating wildlife plus diverse architecture and world-class art galleries. Best of all, many of Victoria's unique and varied landscapes are easily accessible as day trips from the state capital Melbourne.
in a word
European history has left many tangible remains in Victoria's cities and towns. The first permanent settlement was established in 1834, some 46 years after Sydney was colonised. In 1851 the rich Victorian goldfields were discovered, attracting immigrants from around the world. Towns like Beechworth and Ballarat boomed during the gold rush and are veritable museum pieces today. Melbourne was founded in 1835 and retains much Victorian-era charm and Gold Boom 1880s architecture. The rugged coastline of the Great Ocean Road, Gippsland's ancient wilderness areas and the high country will enchant lovers of landscape. 88 Lovers of wildlife can spot penguins on Phillip Island and kangaroos, koalas plus many species of bird in the state's many national parks. Lovers of food and wine can eat and drink their way around the wineries and freshproduce hubs whilst history lovers can relive the gold-rush era in the goldfield towns. For the active, skiing, surfing, rockclimbing, hiking and sailing are all on offer, alternatively choose to pamper yourself at Daylesford's hot springs or simply stroll on one of the many deserted beaches. Victoria cannot fail to impress, you'll love every piece of it.
