INTRODUCTION
S A N YA
see & do
SANYA Situated at the southernmost end of Hainan Island, Sanya boasts 19 bays across its 130 miles long coastline. Surrounded by mountains on three sides and the sea on the other, the landscape is dotted with tranquil bays, coconut forests, pristine white sand beaches and dramatic caves. The town itself is located on a small peninsula, adjoined to the mainland by a series of bridges. YALONG BAY, SANYA Undoubtedly the most popular district of Sanya, this crescent shaped bay boasts unparalleled natural beauty with endless rolling hills, stunning beaches and crystal clear waters. As a protected marina area, the numerous well-preserved coral reefs provide the perfect underwater home for a vibrant kaleidoscope of tropical fish, perfect for snorkelling and scuba diving. Above water activities are well catered for with a wide range of watersports available along the beach. After a lazy day soaking up the tropical sunshine, relax in the evening in the hotel restaurants and bars that line the beach.
SANYA BAY The sweeping Sanya Bay stretches an incredible 14 miles. Much more low key than its neighbour Yalong Bay, an absence of individual shops and bars along the beachfront highlights a sense of privacy and tranquillity. This is very much a beach for those seeking a more laid-back stay. Relax by day on fine soft sands that lead down to crystal clear waters, the tiny East and West islands on the horizon framing the ocean beyond. At night, the coconut trees that line the beach are beautifully illuminated to form what is popularly known as the `Long Corridor.' Evening entertainment is provided within the small number of hotels that fringe the stunning beach. SANYA NIGHT MARKET A great place to soak up the local atmosphere. Treat yourself to some of the tempting seafood on offer at the many stalls serving the days catch, or haggle over a souvenir or two at one of the craft stalls. Enticing tea-houses and other magical stores selling a collection of weird and wonderful objects all add to the bustling vibrancy of the market.
THE REMOTEST CORNER OF THE EARTH Some 16 miles to the west of Sanya stands a picturesque beach framed by coconut trees, a beautiful highlight for visitors who come to Hainan Island to experience its irresistible natural beauty. Nestled by the side of the beach, gently lapped by calm turquoise waters is an ancient rock formation upon which are carefully etched a number of Chinese characters. Translated, they signify that the beach is `the end of the sky', echoing the ancient belief that China literally was the most southern shore and remotest corner in the earth. GOLF Combine the natural beauty of Hainan Island with a challenging round of 18 holes at the recently opened Sanya Sun Valley Golf Club. The par 73 championship golf course covers 7,875 yards and has a particularly challenging 18th. The ideal way to spend sunrise or sunset, green fees and club hire can be arranged locally. PRIVATE TRANSFERS Available at £18 per person each way. Maximum 3 passengers per car.
