TOURING
ACROSS THE ROOF OF THE WORLD
DAY 5
A full day city tour includes Lhasa's cardinal landmark the Potala Palace, once the seat of the Tibetan Government and winter residence of successive Dalai Lamas. Thirteen storeys high and split into numerous apartments, palaces and chapels, it offers a revealing insight into the life and times of the political centre of Tibet. Your day continues with a visit to the golden roofed Jokhang Temple, the most revered religious monument in Lhasa and home to a vivid collection of some of Tibet's finest art treasures. Finally explore Barkhor, a bustling quadrangle of markets, shops and stalls that surround the Temple and watch as the highly colourful and ornate nomads from eastern Tibet go about their daily business.
DAY 9
Drive from Shigatse to New Tinggri visiting en route Sakya Monastery. In contrast to the monasteries in Lhasa, its architectural foundations are Medieval Mongolian. It was originally built as a cave in the mountainside before Kublai Khaan, son of Mongolia's founding father Chinggis Khaan, moved it across the river in the 13th Century and developed it into the magnificent monastery it remains today. Along the way also enjoy the stunning natural scenery of the Himalayas. In New Tingrri, transfer to the New Tingrri Hotel for two nights. Awake the next morning for an unforgettable day tour to Everest Base Camp. Located on the southern side of the highest mountain on earth, it is the starting point of the original ascent in 1953 by Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. The journey to and from the Base Camp is over rough terrain, but the stunning views over a huge sweep of Himalayan mountains more than compensate.
12 NIGHTS
DAY 6
An informative and relaxing day beginning with the Sera and Drepung Monasteries. The serene Sera, meaning `Wild Rose Garden', is designed around a main Assembly Hall with perfectly preserved ancient murals, golden scriptures and many ornate stupas to be found within its highly decorated walls. Considered one of the `Three Great Monasteries', Drepung was once the world's largest monastery housing almost 10,000 monks at its peak. Take a walk up the hill it dominates for a breathtaking panoramic view of Lhasa and the surrounding mountains. Finally, your tour ends at Norbulingka Park. Situated in the western suburbs of Lhasa, it was built in the 1740s during the reign of the seventh Dalai Lama and later enlarged to become his Summer Palace.
