Abu Dhabi is one of the seven sovereign sheikhdoms that complete the United Arab Emirates. Described as the `Garden City of the Gulf' Abu Dhabi, and the island on which it stands, is graced with parks, green boulevards and verdant gardens yet is one of the most modern cities in the world, and capital and centre of government to the United Arab Emirates.

FISHING HARBOUR AND DHOW YARD Visit the Fishing Harbour and Dhow Yard to see how these sturdy wooden vessels that once took Arab seafarers to China and East Africa in quest of trade are made. FORTS Just east of the city, Al Maqtaa Fort is a 200 year old relic build to keep bandits away from the city's riches. Diwan Amiri, the famous White Fort nearby was built in 1793 and is well worth a visit. FUTAISI ISLAND Take a trip by boat across to this pretty eco-tourist resort home to gazelles, flamingos and eagles for a day away from the city. ABU DHABI CULTURAL FOUNDATION The Cultural Foundation has become a landmark in the emirates holding cultural events and workshops throughout the year. THE HERITAGE VILLAGE A small museum depicting the traditional daily activities of the local community prior to the discovery of oil. 58 SHOPPING A few impressive shopping malls are perfect for a tempting treat or two, and the Abu Dhabi Duty Free Shopping centre is certainly one of the best in the world. Seekers of Arabian artifacts should head to the Khalifa Centre where an abundant array of goods at discounted prices can be found. In early March each year, The Abu Dhabi Shopping Festival is filled with fantastic bargains, sales and prizes. GOLF Boasting world-class facilities, a striking clubhouse, flawless fairways and seven lakes, The Abu Dhabi Golf Club by Sheraton provides an oasis of tranquillity carved out of the desert. There are two international golf courses, a wealth of practice facilities and extensive leisure facilities for player's use. Abu Dhabi golf courses are `spike free'. There is no minimum handicap required to use the course but players are expected to be proficient and well versed in golf etiquette.
