CAMBODIA
TOURING
Kratie is also the starting point for a short boat ride to view the rare Irrawaddy freshwater dolphins. On arrival transfer to the Terres Rouges Lodge, a former provincial governer's lakeside residence, your home for the next two nights.
mondulkiri tour
3 NIGHTS Departs daily Cost per person in a twin £237 Single supplement £12 Pushed on the edge of Cambodia bordering Vietnam, Mondulkiri provides dramatic contrasts to the rest of Cambodia. The most sparsely populated province, Mondulkiri is home to the Phnong minority groups along with wild animals such as elephants, tigers and bears. Your visit to the this windswept landscape of rolling hills and pine clad mountains will remain a memorable visit to a land almost forgotten by its nation as you explore minority villages, picturesque waterfalls and take in dramatic untouched scenery truly a remote frontier!
DAY 2
Enjoy breakfast at the lodge and head north towards Laos and the village of Taveng. Your journey breaks first at the waterfall (June - October only) close to the tiger caves of Veyrum Plang. Later stop by a number of Kroeung villages located along the forest roadside. Very much a hunting and farming minority, they are also devotees of animism, the belief that souls inhabit all or most objects. Following a tranquil picnic, continue on to Yaklaom lake. Formed by a volcanic eruption over 4,000 years ago. Here enjoy a late afternoon swim before returning to the Terres Rouges Lodge for the evening.
Explore picturesque waterfalls, some of the largest in Cambodia, engage hilltribes and minority villages seeing unique customs and traditions. See coffee and pepper plantations all the while taking in the delightful scenery that surrounds you. Today will be memorable as you experience the livelihood and simple life of the local inhabitants of this untouched eastern province.
DAY 4
Depart Sen Monorom this morning after breakfast for your long journey back to Phnom Penh. Enjoy lunch on the way at a local restaurant and cross the Mekong river near Prey Veang before arriving back into Phnom Penh early evening. Due to the late arrival into Phnom Penh we advise a stay in Phnom Penh overnight.
DAY 3
Head northwest towards the Laos border and the tribal wild east of Cambodia. Today explore the less visited regions of this northeastern province. Pass through verdant bamboo forests and plantations of coffee and cashew before reaching the remote village of Voeun Sai, located on the banks of the Se San River. Observe across the water the remote Chinese village in Cambodian territory where Khmer is rarely spoken. Continue upstream by boat (by jeep March - May) to the Tampoun village of Ka Choan to view the ceremonial totem poles before arriving at the Kachang Waterfall. Take a swim or relax and absorb the view as the water crashes to the river below it, sending a sea of mist high up into the air above. Return for dinner and your final night at the Terres Rouges Lodge.
DAY 1
Depart early morning for your journey east crossing the Japanese Bridge to Kampong Cham. Your journey today takes you 260 miles to the mountainous remote frontiers of Mondulkiri. On your long but rewarding journey drive along the Sam Leng logging road gradually rising from the Tonle Sap basin into the hill country. En route stop over to see rubber plantations established by the French tyre maker Michelin. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before arriving in the province of Mondulkiri and its provincial capital Sen Monorom for the next three nights. This small extended village provides home to a diverse community surrounded by a backdrop of forested green hills. Its slow pace of life provides the perfect base to explore this culturally rich region.
DAY 4
Depart Terres Rouges Lodge after breakfast for a visit to the local market at Banlung before driving back to Phnom Penh, visiting Wat Rokakanda (100 column Pagoda) and the ancient temple of Wat Nokor en route. Due to a late arrival in Phnom Penh we advise a stay in Phnom Penh overnight.
DAY 2
Wake to picturesque surroundings in this small provincial village, enjoy breakfast and depart for your days exploration of the area. This morning travel north to visit the village of Phulung. On arrival board your elephant and explore the surrounding area and forest on elephant back. This leisurely and quiet way to explore the region provides views from above as you sit elegantly atop your friendly transportation. Enjoy lunch in the area and journey back to Phulung before returning this afternoon to Sen Monorom to explore a little at leisure. This evening enjoy dinner at a local restaurant and overnight at your basic accommodation.
