in a word
Whilst Veneto's favourite city may be Venice, this region is a treasure trove of small yet fascinating cities of art and beacons of fine living. Blessedly devoid of tourist crowds, as the average traveller aims only to see the city on the lagoon, most miss out on the other delightful attractions. Verona, home to Romeo and Juliet is one of the most historical little cities in the country. Vicenza, a memorable testament to one of the most influential architects in history, Andrea Palladio. Chioggia, a miniature replica of Venice, with all the canals and none of the crowds. Soave, a fairytale castle town renowned for its famous vine. Valpollicella, a verdant valley strewn with countless family wineries, Padua, where lovers of Renaissance painting can see Giotto's 26 memorable fresco cycle. Lake Garda, flanked by lemon and olive groves, with the snowy Alps reflected in its silver waters, Treviso, with its amazing architecture, and many more. By contrast, Trentino also known as Sudtirol, along the boarder with Austria, is a dramatic land of saw-toothed ridges and snowcapped peaks, alpine meadows, immaculate medieval towns and sparkling waterfalls. It offers delightful hikes along an extensive network of well marked trails, with stops in remote mountains hamlets and is named after beautiful Trento. One of the prettiest towns in the region is Merano, also called `City of Flower', surrounded by peaks that reach altitude of 10,000 feet, and enjoys a sheltered climate that keeps it mild in winter and cool in summer.
