INTRODUCTION
LAKES
see & do
LAKE MAGGIORE Known locally as `Verbana' which is a flower growing abundantly along its shores, it is Italy's second largest lake. Stresa, Maggiore's most enchanting town, poses beautifully under the majestic peak of Mottarone, just across from the mystical Borromean Islands. LAKE GARDA The palatial hotels, the exotically palm tree lined esplanades, slender cypress and lemon groves have long given this enchanting place a Mediterranean holiday feel. Gardone Riviera, with its sumptuous old villas, lush gardens and hotel lined lovely promenades oozes old fashion elegance. LAKE COMO Bella Bellagio boasts one of the most scenic positions in Italy. Menaggio is a pleasant vibrant little resort with an easy route to visit Lake Lugano, linked by regular ferries to Bellagio and Varenna. Varenna, a colourful picturesque town, is as beautiful and unspoilt as Bellagio, with very easy access and frequent ferries to other areas around the lake.
LAKE ORTA Located in the Piedmont region, is one of Italy's least visited lakes, unjustly so, as it is delightful set among the foothills of the Alps. The lake's main resort is Orta San Giulio, a charming little town with an historical centre containing handsome palazzi, and decorated houses. LAKE ISEO Located in the Lombardy region, is a glaciated lake of incomparable beauty. One of its biggest attractions is Monte Isola, the largest inland lake island in Europe. Easily reached by ferry, it is traffic free and ideal for walking or cycling.
