in a word
Between mainland Italy and Tunisia, Sicily is Italy's largest island. Both Mediterranean and Greek civilisations have contributed to enrich the history of this land. Most of our hotels are located in and around the immensely picturesque resort town of Taormina, perched high on Mount Tauro in sight of Mount Etna, accessed by a short cable car ride down to the sea known as Taormina Mare. Its close neighbour and seaside fishing town of Giardini Naxos originated as a Greek settlement and is just five miles from Taormina. Imperial Palermo is built around a splendid natural harbour. It enjoys excellent restaurants and shops, interesting churches and fine examples of Norman monuments. Cefalù is an unspoilt seaside town with excellent beach facilities. It is famed for its proud cathedral from the 12th Century. Majestic Agrigento is home to some of the finest Greek Doric temples outside Greece. Romantic Syracuse was home to Archimedes and the Sicilian baroque buildings at Ortigia are beautiful, with many fascinating places, Marsala is a seaport city located on the westernmost point of the island, best known as the source of Marsala wine. Mazara del Vallo, founded by the Phoenicians in the 9th Century BC is nowadays known as the Kasbah due to its reminiscent Arab appearance and is considered to be the most important fishing centre in Italy.
