Austria is a delightful Alpine country of flower bedecked chocolate box chalets and pretty villages where traditional customs are kept very much alive. The Tirol is dominated by soaring peaks, dramatic scenery and steep sided valleys in the west before gradually softening to gently rolling pine clad mountains in the east. Salzburgerland is home to wide valleys, beautiful deep lakes and some of the highest mountains in Austria, which can be found in the Hohe Tauern National park, forming the border with the southern province of Carinthia. Here the balmy climate and Austria's southerly neighbours of Slovenia and Italy have influenced the food, culture and architecture. In the Salzkammergut, the dazzling lakes are gently framed by lush green hillsides and the villages have a rich musical heritage and strong links to Salzburg, which itself is a delightful small city with a fascinating history made famous by Mozart and The Sound of Music.
