ORTA & ISEO Located in the Piedmont region, Orta is one of Italy's least visited lakes, unjustly so, as it is delightful set among the foothills of the Alps. The lake's main resort is Orta San Giulio, a charming little town with an historically centre rich with handsome palazzo, decorated houses bustling piazzas, Sacro Monte and the picturesque San Giulio Island. In the Lombard region, Iseo is a glaciated lake of incomparable beauty. Its biggest attraction is Monte Isola, the largest inland lake island in Europe, traffic free, its also ideal for walking or cycling. Flanked by the notorious wine producing region of Franciacorta, is also best known for its dry spumante metodo champenois. LAKE COMO A wonderfully romantic lake adorned with imposing waterfront grand villas, glorious gardens and quaint churches set against a dramatic backdrop of snow-capped mountains, the splendour of the Italian Lake District. Writers from Virgil to Hemingway have flocked to Lake Como inspired by its tranquil waters and inspiring scenery. Lake Como is an ideal base for leisurely strolls along the lakeside promenades.
Bellagio and Cadenabbia have pleasant lidos with lake bathing and mountain bikes can be hired to explore the area. LAKE MAGGIORE It may be Italy's second largest lake, yet Maggiore is said to rank first in terms of beauty. Internationally famous, the lake boasts a picturesque, spectacular landscape and mild climate, which favours the luxuriant vegetation and the botanical gardens. On Maggiore's shores are truly glorious examples of `Belle Époque' palazzos and refined elegance. LAKE GARDA Undoubtedly the most popular and largest of the lakes in northern Italy, bordering three regions; Trentino, Lombardy and Veneto Garda, stretches almost 30 miles in length, with a wonderfully contrasting water's edge, from the planes towards the peaks of the Dolomites. Impressive rocky cliffs, occasionally swathed in pines, hug the shoreline. This lake provides a range of sport facilities, as well as a thriving lifestyle. LAKE TRASIMENO West of Perugia, in the verdant Umbrian region, once troubled by Hannibal and the destruction of two Roman legions, lies Lake Trasimeno. Now subtly calm, sleepy and placid, it is kissed by gentle rolling hills swathed with olives and vineyards.
With neighbouring Tuscany, it is undoubtedly an ideal base from which to explore the famous sights of these two marvellous regions. Perugia, Gubbio, Assisi, Siena and Florence are all accessible in a day. ALPS & DOLOMITES Breathtakingly beautiful scenery with steep and rugged mountain peaks sheltering gentle pastures, covered in edelweiss, crocus and gentian. Deep valleys patched with terraced vineyards, fruit trees and romantic castle-topped hills. These regions exude Italian authenticity, culture and charm, and deserve to be explored. Picture perfect Selva, charming Tirolean nestled in Val Gardena. Val di Fassa, sprawled across the heart of the spectacular Dolomite mountains. Rich in history tradition and culture, Cavallese and Predazzo are some of the most popular little towns in Val di Fiemme. In Trentino strollers and hikers will find countless well marked trials amidst the unmistakable skyline. Last but not least the Piedmont region, Turin and the Gran Paradiso National Park in the Alps, the hub of Pragelato is contrasting yet a paradise of peace and good living.
