This stylish and famous resort lies in the shadow of the awesome Matterhorn towering at 14,650 feet and is a charming, picturesque village with some amazing walking opportunities, excellent shopping and an abundance of nightlife with unique views of the dazzling glaciers.
INFORMATION Airport: Geneva. Local Transport: A car free village. The nearest car park is in the village of Tasch, three miles down the valley. Access to Zermatt is by mountain railway. There are electrically powered taxis and buses as well as horse drawn carriages. Fly Luggage: Operates to Zermatt. Transfers: 2nd class rail transfers included. 1st class rail travel is available for a supplement of £16. Transfer time is 4 hours. Dominated by that most famous of peaks, the Matterhorn, this picture book village is reached by mountain railway, no traffic, just horse drawn carriages and electric cars. You are surrounded by some of Europe's highest mountains with over 250 miles of excellent signposted paths suitable for all grades of walker and the network of mountain trains, chair lifts and cable cars make access to the higher trails easy. The village centre is beautifully maintained in traditional style, though cowsheds have given way to designer shops and five star hotels. Throughout the day and in the evening, the narrow streets are alive with people and there's a wealth of restaurants, stublis and bars to choose from.

FOOD & DRINK As well as the convenience of the many restaurants within the superb hotels of Zermatt, the main street is lined with restaurants offering foods from all nations, to suit all tastes and budgets. Wine tasting and an exhibition about wine in the fascinating Glacier Palace, on the Matterhorn, should not be missed. CULTURAL HIGHLIGHTS There are art galleries, folklore evenings on Sunnegga paradise and the new Matterhorn Museum where you can experience the history of climbing and tourism in Zermatt, the first ascent of the Matterhorn, alpine flora and fauna, geology and archaeology interactively. WALKING Around 250 miles of hiking trails pass through forests, past glaciers and romantic mountain lakes. There are numerous theme trails, among them the Marmot Trail, the Gourmet Trail and the Höhenweg Trail.

KLEIN MATTERNHORN & THE GLACIER PALACE The highest cableway in Europe transports visitors up past giant crevasses to the Matterhorn glacier paradise and into a breathtaking mountain landscape of glaciers and permanent snow. The exciting tour from Zermatt to the Matterhorn glacier paradise takes about 40 minutes. The world's highest Glacier Palace and the various glacial splits and gaps, can all be explored in amazement. ROTHORN A trip by underground funicular and gondola/cable car will take you to Rothorn, the highest sightseeing platform in Europe, offering a breathtaking 360° panoramic view of the Swiss, Italian and French Alps. You can even go before dawn and watch the amazing colours of the mountain at sunrise. SCHWARZSEE 8,400 feet up you will find an inviting restaurant, sun terrace and the tiny chapel of `Mary of the Snow'. GORNEGRAT £16 per person. Departs: Daily. The highest open-air rack railway in Europe climbs up to a height of over 10,000 feet past Swiss stone pine and larch forests. At the top enjoy breathtaking all round views of 29 peaks above 13,000 feet, with the Matterhorn right in the centre. Visit the Hotel Kulm Gornegrat and maybe enjoy lunch or dinner (reservations recommended). SUMMER SKIING Summer skiing is possible with some of the highest mountains in the world which are perpetually snow capped. Depending on the snow conditions there are more than 12 miles of slopes. The Gravity Park is also open for most of the summer, which attracts snowboarders with a superpipe, halfpipe, kickers, jumps and rails.
