The USA and Canada are famed for offering some of the best skiing in the world. Whether you are an off-piste powder chaser or a fair-weather skier, you will find your winter wonderland in these upbeat countries. USA Skis were introduced to the USA in the late 1830's by Scandinavian immigrants who settled in the upper Midwest. If you have never experienced skiing in the USA then you will be captivated by the contrast to the European destinations. The high standards of courtesy and service and the absence of crowds on the piste, all add to the relaxed and comfortable ambience. Of course, if you want a lively week of après ski, the US destinations can also provide this. Wild West saloons and the American diners you would expect, are all key features of the mountain resorts. Colorado was one of the first ski areas to be visited by the British skier and it has some of the most alluring slopes and resorts that cater for all levels of skier and snowboarder. 14 CANADA A friendly welcome along with spectacular scenery are all part of the Canadian winter adventure. The snow keeps on falling and with an average snowfall of up to 900 centimetres a year, you can be guaranteed perfect powder on the slopes. As with the US, the Canadians have an excellent service culture and you will find in most resorts, a selection of mountain hosts who greet you at the lifts and assist you in planning your skiing or boarding programme for the day. The grooming of the slopes is a continual process, so on many occasions you feel like you are skiing on a plush carpet. Off-piste for boarders is in abundance and can be classified as boarder heaven.
