Over cloudy, bubbling glacial streams, through deep valleys cut by long disappeared glaciers, alongside Alpine meadows and past rugged mountains, the Glacier Express exhibits everything that makes travel by rail in Switzerland so appealing. Wide panoramas open up as you take the leisurely journey across the Grisons region between Zermatt, in the shadow of the Matterhorn, and the glamorous mountain resort of St Moritz. On the nation's most famous train ride the scenery changes with the seasons; colourful meadows and luscious forests that line the route through spring and summer become a shimmering wonderland covered with virgin snow as the winter sets in.

Traverse the Alps, cross the border into Italy and enjoy arguably the most stunning views on the entire Swiss rail network, part of which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Around each corner the outlook becomes even more spectacular with green valleys and forests, sweeping viaducts, dark tunnels, and great rock faces; it even ascends high enough to glimpse the Bernina Mountain Glacier. To cross the Bernina Pass the track climbs to just under 7,400 feet and incorporates one of the steepest sections of railway in the world. Starting at St Moritz, Davos or Chur the train travels into the Italian border town of Tirano.

Between Lake Geneva and Central Switzerland this scenic route transports you through expansive vineyards, over the 3,300 foot Brünig Pass, under the shadow of the Alps and past a number of glistening lakes. Leaving Montreux and the `Swiss Riviera' behind, you will travel through Zweisimmen, before changing trains and continuing into the highlands of the Bernese Oberland region towards the mountain-fringed town of Interlaken. Proceeding along the northern shoreline of Lake Brienzer, the Golden Pass' panoramic windows allow mesmerising views of the picturesque lake with traditional paddle steamers and waterside castles. Traditional Alpine chalets line the route up to the Brünig Pass before the train descends to the German speaking, historic city of Lucerne. This route can also be done in reverse.
