DAY 1 h Swiss International Air 1 Lake Lugano Lines flight from Heathrow to Z�rich. Your rail journey begins through magnificent green meadows and breathtaking mountain valleys to the canton of Graub�nden, in the east of the country. Your journey ends in the resort of Davos which is renowned for its pure mountain air (approx. 2� hours). Upon arrival, a short stroll will take you to the four star Meierhof Hotel (p57) for a three night stay in a Standard room. DAY 2 h Enjoy the next couple Traverse magnificent mountain viaducts, through amazing switchback tunnels and across the 2,253 metre Bernina Pass. The section between Thusis and Tirano has been classed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The journey finishes across the Italian border in Tirano, from where a scenic bus ride returns you to Switzerland and the stunning lakeside town of Lugano. DAY 5 h The next two days are at leisure to explore Lugano, the `Monte Carlo of Switzerland' in the very Italian feeling Swiss region of Ticino. Spend your time wandering the city's sophisticated streets and delightful Old Quarter or enjoying the outdoor lifestyle on the water and exploring the surrounding hills. DAY 7 h Leaving beautiful Lugano behind, continue by train to Locarno, from where you will change to another of Switzerland's famous trains, the `Centovalli'. Another trans-frontier journey will see you travel from Lake Maggiore, into Italy and through dramatic canyons, sleepy villages and dense, verdant forests, before returning to Switzerland and the terminus at Brig. Connect by train to Zermatt, one of Switzerland's most exciting mountain resorts, nestled dramatically in the lee of the fearsome, craggy peak of the Matterhorn (approx. 1� hours). Enjoy a three night stay at either the three star Alpenroyal (p72) in a Superior room or the four and a half star Park Hotel Beau Site (p73) in a Standard hillside room. DAY 8 h The next two days are of days at leisure exploring Davos, Europe's highest city, and its surrounding countryside. Graub�nden boasts over 8,000 miles of hiking and biking trails, many passing spectacular mountain lakes and through idyllic alpine meadows. Davos also boasts a wide variety of caf�s, bars and restaurants, and a number of museums ranging from Toys to Medicine. DAY 4 h Depart Davos on board the at leisure to explore this most famous of Swiss mountain resorts. Some of the area's challenging hikes include the famous Haute Route and you can ride Europe's highest cable car to the spectacular Klein Matterhorn. Summer skiing, mountaineering, paragliding and mountain biking are all popular pursuits in this charming Alpine resort. DAY 10 h One final journey on the fabulously efficient Swiss railways takes you through scenic alpine valleys and along the shore of Lake Geneva to Geneva (approx. 3� hours).
