Plettenberg Bay 2 nights · Oudtshoorn 1 night · Hermanus 1 night · Paarl 2 nights An indulgent saunter along this most scenic of South Africa's regions, combining the splendour of the Plettenberg Bay/Knysna area, the caves and ostriches of Oudtshoorn, the picturesque whale watching town of Hermanus and ending in the beauty of the Winelands, either with private transfers ensuring an intimate and personal discovery, or as a self drive including BMW 3 Series (or similar). DAY 1 South African Airways overnight flight from Heathrow to George, via Johannesburg. On arrival you will be met by your driver and transferred approx. 90 minutes to the fashionable seaside resort of Plettenberg Bay for two nights at The Plettenberg hotel, an elegant and stylish retreat within walking distance of the town and wonderful beaches. DAY 2 Explore this beautiful area at your own leisure, perhaps visiting nearby Knysna, famous for its oysters and picturesque setting on the banks of the lagoon. DAY 3 Journey west along the coast today through Knysna, past lakes and dunes to George before heading inland through mountain passes to the ostrich capital of the world, Oudtshoorn. From here you can choose from an excellent range of optional activities the astonishing Cango Caves, a working Ostrich farm, or visit `Meerkatmagic' where you can walk with wild meerkats in a nature reserve. Your home for the night is Rosenhof Country House, a charming deluxe class Victorian homestead. DAY 4 A long drive west today along the R62 route, considered more scenic and interesting than the coastal road and taking in the towns of Calitzdorp, Ladysmith, and through the Klein Karoo to Hermanus. A popular resort set overlooking Walkers Bay where during whale watching season (June-November) you can experience marvellous sightings from the clifftops and beaches. The Marine hotel is magnificently sited on the town centre clifftops with stunning views. The seafood restaurant here is highly recommended! DAY 5 Today begins with the relatively short journey from Hermanus into the rolling hills of the Cape Winelands, an area of amazing natural beauty and framed by the dramatic Drakenstein mountains. The Grande Roche enjoys an impressive location at the foot of the Pearl Mountain in Paarl, with sweeping views over rows of vines to the town. This beautiful Cape Dutch manor is Africa's only Relais Gourmand rated property and offers personal wine tasting sessions with the sommelier. Spend two nights here to explore the charms and produce of the region at your own pace. DAY 7 Return to Cape Town airport for your South African Airways overnight flight direct to Heathrow. Alternatively extend your stay with three nights in nearby Cape Town at the Mount Nelson in a Superior room (see p127). Meals included: Breakfast throughout. Departures: Daily.
