`A VAST AND VIBRANT LAND OF WHITE SAND BEACHES, TURQUOISE WATERS, BUSTLING CITIES AND SPECTACULAR GAME VIEWING, KENYA INTOXICATES THE SENSES LIKE NO OTHER COUNTRY' SUDAN ETHIOPIA SOMALIA UGANDA KENYA Kisumu ZAIRE RWANDA BURUNDI Mombasa SEYCHELLES Nairobi TANZANIA KENYA Kenya is an intoxicating and vast country as diverse as your imagination from the famous big cats and colourful Masai warriors to snowcapped peaks and thick forests, from powder soft beaches to vibrant cities, it has a heritage and culture that continues to fascinate. Situated in the heart of East Africa straddling the equator, Kenya is a land of wildlife documentary heaven and a sunbather's paradise. The beaches on the Indian Ocean coast are simply stunning and make for a superb winter sun destination, while it's the abundance of incredibly diverse wildlife that the country is renowned for. The Masai Mara is host to the largest animal movement in the world during the annual migration and the quality and accessibility of the game viewing here make it obvious why this is the spiritual home of the safari. We highly recommend travelling in the quieter months of February to May for a more private safari experience. The National Parks and Reserves of Kenya are vast and varied. The Mara is perhaps the most famous in the world and is a safari lover's paradise for good reason. The areas north of Nairobi such as Samburu, Shaba, Meru and Laikipia have a different ecosystem to the south and the acacia woodland is interrupted by bush, grasslands and scrub. Meanwhile the southeastern parks of Tsavo contrast again with a distinct red soil and meandering rivers, whilst nearby Amboseli sits at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro where the plains are open savannahs. In each the scenery is spellbinding and the game magnificent. On the 300 mile coastline north and south of Mombasa are white sand beaches and warm turquoise waters. The exotic ambience, friendly people and fresh seafood are some of the unique characteristics of a beach holiday here and relaxing at the coast is the ideal way to refresh yourself after a safari. The island of Funzi, just a short boat ride from the mainland, offers a Robinson Crusoe style remote paradise island experience. An eclectic range of influences, cultures and traditions awaits throughout this astonishing country. For weather, passport, vaccinations, visas and flying time information see page 220.
