A beach lover's paradise, adorable Antigua in the Eastern Caribbean is a treasure trove of 365 picturesque secret coves and palm-fringed bays with an undisputed claim of `a beach for every day of the year'. The island holds two main passions, cricket and sailing, the former rousing strong Antiguan pride and the most famous island `son' being Sir Viv Richards, former West Indies captain. Antigua hosts wonderful sailing and windsurfing opportunities and although it has one of the driest climates in the Caribbean region the small rainforest area is rich in bird and insect life. The coral reefs, once the curse of marauding enemy ships, now provide a heaven for underwater exploration for divers and snorkellers. Calm seas and natural harbours of the island, once filled with pirates of the seas, are now a mecca for marine craft of all shapes and sizes, especially during Antigua Sailing Week and an opportunity to sail around Bird Island in a pirate ship is a memorable experience. Barbuda, sister island to Antigua just 26 miles north, is famous for its tranquillity and breathtaking 17 miles of pinkish-white sand beaches and can easily be visited by day. However, if you wish to venture further around the winding coastline of Antigua itself and naval and pirate history allures, then a visit to Nelson's Dockyard in the spectacular setting of English Harbour will entice and appeal, along with the 18th century battlements of Shirley Heights and Fort James. Don't miss a visit to St. John's, capital and home to Heritage Quay, the cool oasis of the enchanting museum depicting the history of the island and a vibrant morning market, which is a feast of food and colour to discover. Why not link Antigua with one or more contrasting Caribbean islands for a fabulous twin or triple-centre tailormade island-hopping experience. Islands such as Anguilla, Barbados, St Lucia and the Virgin Islands are quickly and easily reached by air, or experienced sailors could charter a yacht and navigate the dazzling seas and stunning shorelines to St Kitts or Nevis. As a beach destination it's hard to beat and if your main priority is idyllic Caribbean soft sandy beaches and pure relaxation then Antigua's captivating character of unpretentious charm is just what you're looking for.
