TOBAGO
An island where beaches are long and sandy and the waters are calm and blue, where everything is low key, whose hummingbird population outnumbers its human one and whose fishing fleets vie with pelicans for the best catch. Nestling in the centre of a natural aquarium, Tobago is encircled by a colourful coral garden, the cove of its coastline piled with pristine sands, the forests of its mountains filled with birdsong. Often called Robinson Crusoe island, this unspoilt idyll allows you to enjoy contemporary comforts while experiencing timeless charm. In Tobago you are never far from the beach - some lively and popular with watersports, restaurants and bars, others serene and secluded. A great place for nature lovers, Englishman's Bay is one of Tobago's jewels, located on the edge of the rainforest, whilst Pigeon Point is another idyllic spot and the tropical rainforest and Little Tobago are great for birdwatching, with over 210 species to view. Historical and nautical stories can be found at Fort George, whilst for natural splendours, travel to Argyle Waterfall and then head to Speyside fishing village for spectacular views and Caribbean charm. Speyside is Tobago's dive capital, but there are wonderful diving opportunities at sites all over the island and underwater delights include over 300 species of coral, turtles, sharks, manta rays and tarpon. The Plymouth Jazz Festival in its 4th year in 2008 is incredibly popular and usually takes place in April. Artists headlining in 2007 included Sir Elton John, Mary J Blige and Diana Ross. Part of the charm of Tobago is the pace of its lifestyle, which varies from slow to static, but the mix of lush gardens of bougainvillea and hibiscus and the tropical rainforest matched by friendly, leisurely service around the island cannot fail to entice. Tranquillity is the keynote on Tobago, a swing of the pendulum from its turbulent past. Tales of swashbuckling pirates and bootlegging buccaneers are kept alive with stories of buried treasure. But the treasure isn't buried on Tobago . . .the treasure is Tobago.
