MALDIVES
Among the thousand sand spits and uninhabited islets of the Maldives about two hundred lush but tiny islands are home to human life. Many of these are the private reserve of a single resort hotel. Each Maldivian gem sits in its own shallow lagoon, formed by encircling coral reefs. You will be captivated by the breathtaking colours of a hundred shades of blue, the swaying palms and the surrounding powder soft sand beaches. Scuba divers and snorkellers are in their element here with some wonderful and accessible dive sites. The clear waters of the ocean surrounding the Maldives are home to some of the best snorkelling and diving opportunities in the world. The Maldives are also perfect for sun worshippers, watersports enthusiasts and those who just want to relax in paradise surroundings. Perhaps sail on a traditional Dhoni boat for a crusoe-style picnic on a desert island beach, or visit local islands. The unspoilt natural beauty of the Maldives is unbeatable, pristine sands, azure waters, astonishing soft corals and a rich and diverse marine life all add to the charm of these beautiful islands. Most resorts offer fitness centres or exotic spas too, amid the most exclusive and luxurious beach, pool or water villas. It is the totally unspoilt nature of the `no news no shoes' Maldives that attracts and charms the traveller, but the fact that they are unspoilt is not by chance. The islanders are keenly protective of their environment and strict measures are in force to safeguard sea life. Divers must be careful to leave coral undisturbed and neither coral nor shells may be removed from sea, beaches or be exported. For the Maldives' marine splendour to survive, the old saying applies . . . Take only photographs leave only footprints. The Maldives are a superb holiday choice for a relaxing and secluded beach holiday in luxurious surroundings, where you can indulge your Robinson Crusoe castaway fantasies to the full! May we also suggest you combine the Maldives with bustling Dubai or the scenically beautiful island gem of Sri Lanka. Create your own unique itinerary.
Please note that the change in seasons, wind direction and tides in the Maldives can cause the island shape and beach width on occasion to change. It may therefore be necessary for affected islands to use sandbags on the beach to minimise the effects of seasonal beach erosion. For weather, passport, vaccinations, visas and flying time information see page 220.
