DAY 4 THU After breakfast, visit the ornate walled fortress of Amber. Lunch at a local restaurant then tour Jaipur and visit the Royal Observatory, Maharaja's Palace and the Palace of the Winds. Return to the train for an early evening departure. DAY 5 FRI Arrive Jaisalmer and tour this city of sandstone `havelis', housed within the ancient fort. Later journey out to the surrounding sand dunes to view a romantic desert sunset accompanied by traditional Rajasthani musicians. Return to Jaisalmer for dinner and entertainment at a local hotel. DAY 6 SAT Arrive in Jodhpur and tour this ancient walled city in the morning, visiting the formidable Mehrengarh Fort with its many colourful palaces. Lunch is served in the impressive surroundings of the Umaid Bhawan Palace, before an afternoon departure to Sawai Madhopur. Dinner on board. DAY 7 SUN Visit to the acclaimed Ranthambore National Park, home to a diverse variety of wildlife including the Indian tiger, wild boar and over three hundred species of birds. Depart late morning for Chittaurgarh and enjoy a tour of this romantic city, including the remains of the 7th Century fort. DAY 8 MON Awake in the enchanting city of Udaipur. Spend the morning on a fascinating city tour. Lunch is served at the exceptional Taj Lake Palace hotel (p42). Depart in the evening for Bharatpur with dinner onboard. DAY 9 TUE Breakfast precedes a tour of the World Heritage listed Keoladeo Ghana Bird Sanctuary, then continue by road to the famed Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri. After the lunch, visit what for many is the highlight of any journey to India, the enchanting Taj Mahal. A tour around the massive 16th Century sandstone Red Fort follows before dining onboard and departing for Delhi.
