`COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE POSSESS A MAGICAL POWER' Anton Chekov IRAN Abu Dhabi UNITED ARAB EMIRATES OMAN SAUDI ARABIA ABU DHABI Described as the `Garden City of the Gulf', Abu Dhabi is graced with parks, green boulevards and verdant gardens yet is one of the most modern cities in the world and capital and centre of government of the United Arab Emirates. It is a city of modern architecture and sumptuously luxurious hotels where wide tree-lined boulevards, white sandy beaches and dramatic desert landscapes provide the perfect backdrop for an array of sporting activities and four wheel drive adventures. Only 40 years ago, Abu Dhabi was but a mere fishing village, however today, mainly as a result of its significant oil wealth, it is one of the world's richest cities and fast gaining popularity as a tourist destination. Brilliantly illuminated minarets, traditional dhow boats and the cultural heritage of Abu Dhabi contrast with the stark beauty of the desert landscape and seafront Corniche. Just east of the city, Al Maqtaa Fort is a 200 year old relic built to keep bandits away from the city's riches. Diwan Amiri, the famous White Fort nearby was built in 1793 and is well worth a visit. The fascinating Fishing harbour and Dhow Yard shows how these sturdy wooden vessels that once took Arab seafarers to China and East Africa in quest of trade are made. The Abu Dhabi Duty Free Shopping centre is one of the best in the world whilst the Khalifa Centre is the place to go if you are after Arabian artefacts. In early March each year, The Abu Dhabi Shopping Festival is filled with fantastic bargains, sales and prizes. In accordance to Muslim beliefs and traditions, religious festivals are timed according to local sightings of the moon. During the month of Ramadan (commencing approximately 02 September 2008), locals will fast during the day, some restaurants may close and there may be restrictions on smoking and drinking. Please respect the Muslim traditions and customs of this mystical and hospitable country. For weather, passport, vaccinations, visas and flying time information see page 220.
