Brimming with contrasts of colour and landscapes, the centuries-old appeal of Morocco shows little sign of changing as time goes by. This is a country steeped in history, where Berber tribes created mountain Shangrila's in the High Atlas and kings settled their capitals, building immense palaces in the heart of their medinas, creating what today are known as the Imperial Cities of Fes, Casablanca, Marrakech and Meknes. Marrakech is truly the city of entertainment in Morocco, in its centre of is the Djemaa el Fna, the operating point for entertainers like acrobats, drummers, dancers, pipe musicians, comedians and storytellers. There's plenty of choice for meals, including the spectacle of the Djemaa el Fna food stalls. The winding streets of the Medina offer many bargains and some surprises! In addition to the hotels featured in Marrakech on the following pages, please see p206-207 for Aman's superb resort just 20 minutes from the old city centre. It seems that the city of Fes is still lingering back in the Middle Ages. As you arrive in the city and begin to walk around your senses are torn between beautiful sights, intricate sounds and colourful smells. It is a UNESCO World Heritage sight and as you begin to explore its labyrinth of alleys you will discover why. The country's loveliest seaside resort is Essaouira, a charming walled town that lies within easy reach of Marrakech and Casablanca. The backbone of the country is formed by four massive mountain ranges, the Rif, High, Middle and Anti Atlas, which run from the Mediterranean in the north to the Atlantic and the Sahara desert in the south, forming a giant transcontinental crossroads that forms a bridge between Europe and Africa. Don't forget also that Morocco has 2,000 miles of coastline, offering staggering landscapes of rocky promontories and sweeping beaches lined by several of the country's most colourful cities and resorts. Morocco is a very hospitable welcoming country of great religious tolerance, so much so that some of Morocco's cities have almost as many church spires and domes as they do mosque minarets. You will find that people here are extremely friendly, polite and curious about the outside world and their competitive nature is only too evident once you try bartering which is a way of life here!
