`HONG KONG IS A 24-HOUR A DAY 365 DAYS A YEAR CITY' Michael Palin from Around the World in 80 days HONG KONG Kowloon Victoria Harbour HONG KONG ISLAND HONG KONG Dazzling and vibrant. Energetic, yet graceful. Hong Kong is a melting pot of new and old, East and West, where colonial elegance meets dramatic Asian style, creating a unique experience of the East. A myriad of skyscrapers stretch upwards, setting a surreal backdrop to the bustling harbour, where Junks and sampans bob gracefully. Traditionally Hong Kong Island has been associated with designer shops and upmarket restaurants amidst a thriving business district, while Kowloon is better known for its bustling street markets and cultural energy. Hong Kong's fascinating history and diverse influences make it as interesting and culturally rich as it is superb for shopping, dining and entertainment. An array of designer shops contrast with street market stalls and Michelin star restaurants including Pierre at Mandarin Oriental as well as fashionable eateries like Nobu and the Philippe Starck designed Felix at The Peninsula. Enjoying local cuisine is a must and the choice is endless, much like the myriad of shops selling everything from Chinese medicine to the latest hightech gadgets. Ride on the famous Star Ferry, crossing the harbour from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island or journey to the heights of Lantau Island on the Ngong Ping 360° cable car where a different perspective of this exciting city is found. Journey to Sai Kung to see an entirely different side to Hong Kong. Embracing the coastline of the New Territories, Sai Kung reveals pockets of greenery, with small farms, sandy bays and parks. Superb seafood is found here, along with a peaceful and rustic experience of Hong Kong, entirely contrasting with the city centre. Throughout the year Hong Kong plays host to an array of festivals from Chinese New Year in February to the Dragon Boat races in June and Hungry Ghost festival in August. Hong Kong offers so much as a destination in itself, but we recommend combining the electric vibrancy of Hong Kong with a more relaxing stay at the beach. Choose from magical Bali, or fly direct to Phuket or Koh Samui in Thailand. Combining another city with Hong Kong offers a further dimension to your holiday. For weather, passport, vaccinations, visas and flying time information see page 220.
