Abu Dhabi
Described as the Garden City of the Gulf', Abu Dhabi is the capital and centre of government of the United Arab Emirates. It is a city of modern architecture and sumptuously luxurious hotels where wide tree-lined boulevards, sandy beaches and dramatic desert landscapes provide the perfect backdrop for an array of sporting activities and four wheel drive adventures.
Only 40 years ago, Abu Dhabi was but a mere shing village, however today, mainly as a result of its signicant oil wealth, it is one of the world's richest cities and fast gaining popularity as a tourist destination. Brilliantly illuminated minarets, traditional dhow boats and the cultural heritage of Abu Dhabi contrast with the stark beauty of the desert landscape and seafront Corniche. The Abu Dhabi Duty Free Shopping centre is one of the best in the world whilst the Khalifa Centre is the place to go if you are after Arabian artefacts. In accordance to Muslim beliefs and traditions, religious festivals are timed according to local sightings of the moon. During the month of Ramadan (commencing approx. 22 August 2009) locals will fast during the day, some restaurants may close and there may be restrictions on smoking and drinking. Please respect the Muslim traditions and customs of this rich and varied land.
