DAY 1 Overnight ight via Bangkok with Thai Airways, arriving the following day in Hanoi. Transfer to the Sotel Metropole for three nights in an Opera room (p83) and rest before an afternoon tour of Hanoi's Old Quarter by traditional cyclo. This evening enjoy a cocktail and informative talk on Vietnam's remarkable history by a local historian before dining at the Press Club restaurant. DAY 3 Visit the One Pillar Pagoda and the marble mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh (closed Mondays and Fridays and during October and November) and the simple house where he lived, concluding your morning tour at the historic Temple of Literature. The afternoon is at leisure, and later in the evening enjoy a traditional water puppet show. DAY 4 Depart for a cruise around UNESCO listed Halong Bay, a picturesque landscape of over 3,000 limestone islets dotted throughout warm emerald waters. DAY 5 Morning ight with Vietnam Airlines to the imperial city of Hue for two nights at La Residence Hotel and Spa in a Deluxe room (p83). Visit the Royal Tombs followed by dinner enjoyed at the Ancient Hue restaurant. DAY 6 Cruise along the Perfume River to the Thien Mu Pagoda and discover the Minh Mang tomb. Return to Hue for an informative tour of Hue's Imperial Citadel. Later seek out some incredible bargains at Dong Ba Market! DAY 7 Depart Hue for the charming UNESCO listed town of Hoi An via the Hai Van Pass. This scenic journey passes pretty villages and fruit orchards as you hug the coastline on your
journey south with ample time to stop by China Beach and the Marble Mountain. Relax for two nights at the Nam Hai in a One bedroom villa (p84). Dine later at the popular Nam Long restaurant in Hoi An. DAY 8 Discover historic Hoi An on a walking tour of the central market, Japanese Bridge, Fukien Assembly Hall and Tan Ky Old House. Browse the many tailors or relax on the beach at the Nam Hai later or take an optional tour to the Cham ruins of My Son. DAY 9 Leave Hoi An this morning by Vietnam Airlines from Danang for your ight to Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) and three nights at the Park Hyatt (p84) in a Park room. A short tour visiting the thought provoking War Remnants Museum, Central Post Oce, Notre Dame cathedral and the Presidential Palace follows. In the evening enjoy dinner at Au Menoir De Khai restaurant. DAY 10 Depart early for a journey to the Mekong Delta for the colourful oating market of Cai Be and a cruise through the Mekong on the Cai Be Princess. DAY 11 A day at leisure or take an optional journey to explore the underground Cu Chi Tunnels network, once a hideout and home for scores of Vietnamese insurgents during the Vietnam War. DAY 12 Depart Vietnam on your Bangkok Airways morning ight to Siem Reap for two nights at the Hotel de la Paix (p85) in a Deluxe garden view room. The new Angkor Museum provides an invaluable background knowledge to the temples, before departing for the South Gate of Angkor Thom, Bayon, Royal Enclosure, Phimeanakas, Elephants Terrace and the Terrace of the Leper King. This evening dine at leisure or on the verandah of a restored local village house (optional). DAY 13 A full day of sightseeing begins with the remarkable sunrise over Angkor Wat and includes guided tours of Banteay Srei and the atmospheric overgrown 12th Century temple of Ta Phrom. Later return to Angkor Wat for a more detailed tour. DAY 14 A day at leisure with an option to visit a local silk farm or relax with a traditional massage before your evening ight to Bangkok with Bangkok Airways, connecting with your Thai Airways ight to Heathrow.
