The Golden Chariot
This luxurious voyage of seven days and seven nights on board the Golden Chariot train unveils empires, unlocks treasures, unravels secrets and takes you to lost kingdoms, wrapped in luxury.
The newly built Golden Chariot, named after the famous Stone Chariot in Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Southern India, will take you to timeless historical heritage sites, resplendent palaces, wildlife and golden beaches. Onboard, the 11 sleeping coaches are beautifully furnished. Each has four en suite cabins all with aircondintioning, plasma television, Wi-Fi and DVD player. There are two dining cars, a bar, two Ayurveda treatment rooms and a gym.
DAY 1 TO DAY 2 Depart Heathrow on British Airways direct to
the Garden City of Bangalore. Upon arrival transfer to The Oberoi for one night. DAY 3 After lunch and train check-in formalities, enjoy an orientation tour of Bangalore before boarding the Golden Chariot and departing early evening for the royal city of Mysore. Enjoy dinner as the scenery rolls by. DAY 4 Explore Mysore, long associated with royal families and a city known for its resplendent palaces and majestic buildings. Continue into the Chamundi Hills and the Mysore Palace, later enjoy afternoon tea and a cultural show before returning to the train. DAY 5 After breakfast, travel by coach to Kabini and the Rajiv Gandhi National Park, once the hunting retreat of the Mysore Maharajas. During the course of the day you will take a boat ride, a wildlife walk and a jungle safari. DAY 6 Depart early this morning for Hassan, enjoying breakfast and the Southern Indian scenery. On arrival in Hassan drive to Halebid and later visit the ornate temple. Continue on to Belur and the magnicent Hoysala Temple Complex with its intricately carved sculptures. After lunch visit Asia's largest monolithic statue before returning to the train and travelling overnight to Hospet. DAY 7 Spend today exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Hampi. The former capital of three generations of Hindu rulers for more than 200 years, sprawling across a spectacular barren and boulder strewn landscape. Over the course of the day you will visit the most important sights including the Virupaksha Temple, Krishna Bazaar and the Elephant Stables. Witness a sound and light show inside the temple complex before returning to the Golden Chariot. DAY 8 Early morning departure for Gadag. On arrival travel by road to Aihole, acclaimed as the Cradle of Hindu Temple Architecture' with over 100 temples scattered around the village. Continue on to the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Pattadakal, picturesquely situated on the banks of the Malprabha river. Later drive to the richly decorated Badami Cave temples, a spectacular sight. This evening the train will depart for Goa. DAY 9 Arrive in Goa and spend the morning relaxing at a hotel using the pool and beach facilities. This afternoon
visit the Old Goa Churches, museum and have tea in an old Portuguese house. Enjoy a nal dinner onboard and travel overnight to Bangalore. You may choose to disembark in Goa in which case you will not receive the sightseeing and instead will be transferred to the Leela Kempinski Goa in a Club suite (see p52) for ve nights or more. Your return ight will be with Jet Airways via Mumbai arriving Heathrow the same day. DAY 10 Arrive Bangalore early morning and after breakfast transfer to The Oberoi for one night. DAY 11 Early morning departure on British Airways arriving Heathrow later the same day. Your holiday includes: Breakfast in Bangalore and Goa; breakfast, lunch and dinner on Golden Chariot; sighseeing with guides as described. Departures: Saturdays year round, although please note that May-Oct is monsoon season in Goa.
