CLASSIC EUROPEAN CITIES
Our holiday collection brings you opportunities to explore many of Europe's classic cities in luxurious style. Europe offers as many unique journeys as it has travellers to take them, its fame is age-old. Amsterdam is relatively small and, thanks to its canals, remains peaceful and relatively uncongested. Above all this is a unique and beautiful city: whether you're touring the elegant waterways, sipping a beer in one of the old cafés, or dodging the trams on Dam Square, there is nowhere quite like it. The charmingly crooked houses, narrow cobbled streets, the tree-lined canals and the generous parks all contribute to the distinctive atmosphere. Berlin had modest beginnings as a trading centre in the 13th Century, but through time grew into a European powerhouse and finally stole centre stage throughout the turbulent 20th Century. Since reunification in 1990, it has evolved into a dynamic, sexy and creative city where a surprising light heartedness lurks beneath an austere exterior. This is a city which thrives on change. Straddling the River Vltava, Prague is a city of contrasts, combining historic architecture with artistic youthful vigour. Stand on the Charles Bridge and gaze up at Prague Castle . . . shop for mementos in magical Wenceslas Square and prepare to be amazed by the profusion of palaces, bridges and churches.
Istanbul TURKEY
Prague is a visually stunning city, with a fairytale extravagance of spires, turrets, domes and red tile roofs. Divided by the meandering River Danube, the twin cities of Buda and Pest combine to form the vibrant and atmospheric Budapest. Affectionately known as the `Queen of the Danube', Budapest is the cultural and commercial heart of Hungary. A city of two halves, one is home to a charming cobblestone Castle District, the other brims with theatres, clubs and swish shopping streets such as Vaciutca. Beside the waters of the Bosphorus, East truly meets West. The great mosques, colourful bazaars and tangled streets of Istanbul will guarantee you an excitingly different experience. Previously known as Byzantium and Constantinople, the ancient city of Istanbul is full of Eastern promise! Moscow has an ancient past evident through the grand arches of St Basil's Cathedral and a more recent history of Soviet power, with the grandeur of Red Square and the onion-domed skyline of the Kremlin. However this is a dynamic society embracing change and its new contacts with the west. The world of the Tsars lives on in Russia's previous capital, St Petersburg, a treasure-trove of spectacular palaces and vast churches bright with mosaics and the Hermitage Museum. In the winter it transforms to a snowy paradise of horse-drawn sleighs.
