ROCCO FORTE'S HOTEL DE ROME
Adjacent to the State Opera House and former Royal Library is Rocco Forte's Hotel de Rome which opened in 2006 in historic building that housed the head office of the Dresdner Bank until 1945. Much of the bank's original ornate and classic design has been incorporated and preserved in this clever conversion, which combines its architectural and historical features with a thoroughly modern twist. The vault of the bank is now a wonderful 60 foot swimming pool. The stillness and quiet atmosphere of this basement area feels an appropriate accompaniment for the Spa de Rome. Six treatment rooms, a sauna, steam bath, relaxation area and a fitness centre are located at the spa. Mediterranean cuisine is served in the Parioli Restaurant which offers al fresco dining in warmer months whilst the regal Opera Court with its original glass ceiling is used for coffee, afternoon tea or a glass of champagne. The Bebel bar has a contemporary feel as it combines funky with traditional and buzzes with conversation in the evenings. Overlooking the Bebelplatz, this is a popular meeting point for guests and locals a like. Each of the 146 large rooms and suites is airconditioned and equipped with the latest technology. The designer of this hotel, Tommaso Ziffer, has taken his inspiration from the classical architect Schinkel to create the bedrooms in a style that mixes contemporary glass and steel `Berlin style'. Classic rooms are as above while the Deluxe rooms are larger in size. Junior suites are composed of a bedroom with a large sitting area. Transfer from Berlin's Tegel airport: 20 minutes
