CARCASSONNE
HÔTEL DE LA CITÉ
Standing between two historic landmarks, the Romanesque Château Comtal and the Gothic Basilica of Saint-Nazaire, the Hôtel de la Cité is set in its own glorious gardens. With its solid stone walls, wood panelling and stained-glass windows, this Orient-Express Hotel offers luxurious hospitality. Rounding the corner and catching sight of a medieval walled city the largest in Europe perched on a hill, perhaps glinting golden in the fading sunlight is a truly awe inspiring experience. Hôtel de la Cité is located in the heart of the medieval town of Carcassonne. With its 52 towers and two concentric walls, the medieval city is the most appropriate place to discover the region where the Cathars once dwelled. Throughout the hotel, the emphasis is on warmth and elegance and you will be delighted by the very pleasant traditional atmosphere - whether relaxing and enjoying a meal in the informal Chez Saskia Brasserie, dining al fresco in the outdoor summer restaurant, Le Jardin de l'Evêque, or enjoying a cocktail in the Library Bar. The Hôtel de la Cité's gastronomic reputation rests on La Barbacane Restaurant. Located in the heart of the hotel, its neo-Gothic room features magnificent fireplaces, high ceilings and cathedral chairs. In summer, the city surpasses itself in showing off its 2,000-year-old setting to full advantage by staging a historical and cultural programme, which takes place from June to September. Outside the hotel, you can take a dip in the heated pool (the only one inside the walled city), surrounded by lush greenery, with an imposing view of the Basilica Saint-Nazaire just beyond. Each of the 61 guestrooms is individually furnished and decorated, traditional style is matched by modern comfort, and all rooms feature the most up-to-date facilities, including airconditioning and television. The rooms at Hôtel de la Cité are not all identical, varying in shape, layout and interiors. Deluxe rooms are decorated in a refined classic style or in a charming Provençal style. Deluxe classic rooms offer views of the medieval city, while Deluxe garden rooms have views of the hotel's gardens and ramparts. The rooms have a kingsize bed or twin beds, a desk and two comfortable armchairs. Junior suites are spacious and elegantly decorated; the lounge area is furnished with a couch, coffee table and writing desk. The bathrooms have separate showers. Medieval junior suites differ in décor with wood panelling, exposed beams and open fireplaces featured in many of these. FOR WORLD CLASS OFFERS including Free Nights: See p140.
