DUBLIN
DELUXE ROOM AT THE SHELBOURNE
THE MERRION
THE GEORGIAN STYLE OF THE MERRION
THE SHELBOURNE
The Shelbourne Dublin, a Renaissance hotel has been an intrinsic part of Dublin's tradition for generations, set at the social heart of the city since it was built in 1824. Reopened in March 2007 following an extensive restoration programme, the hotel is once again at the heart of Ireland's capital and offers fantastic value. Located on the prestigious St Stephen's Green right in the heart of the Georgian town, close to the Grafton Street shopping area, the reborn hotel has perfectly preserved its beautiful architectural features. This is where, in 1922, Michael Collins presided over the first draft of the Irish Constitution. The grand marble hotel lobby epitomises the historic elegance prevalent throughout, from the No 27 Bar and Lounge with an innovative cocktail menu; to the famous Horseshoe Bar, one of Dublin's best known; to the wonderfully positioned Lord Mayor's Lounge overlooking the Georgian square. The modern steak and seafood restaurant The Saddle Room will satisfy the most discerning of visitors. There are 246 rooms, plus 19 suites, 12 of which are named after famous guests associated with the hotel. Rooms feature luxurious beds, Egyptian cotton sheets, airconditioning, flat-screen television, CD player, minibar, and elegant marble bathroom. Queen rooms are as described, Deluxe and Premium are more spacious rooms. Transfer from Dublin airport: 25 minutes. Meals per night: Breakfast £26.
THE MERRION
The magnificent Merrion is the result of one of the most impressive restoration projects in Dublin in recent years. A new contemporary wing set around private period gardens has been added to the main hotel, made from the combination of four elegant and stunning Georgian townhouses, dating back to the 1760's. Originally homes to nobility including the first Duke of Wellington, within easy walking distance from The Merrion are the Government Buildings, The Natural History Museum, The National Gallery, Trinity College, Grafton Street with its excellent shops and the `golden mile' with its pubs, shops and restaurants dotted around St Stephen's Green, the townhouses have been beautifully restored to reveal the detail and craftsmanship of a bygone era. Antiques and rich Irish fabrics have been hand selected to grace the elegant rooms of the main house which include the award winning Cellar Restaurant renowned for its superb food, and the acclaimed Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud which overlooks the gardens. Afternoon tea and light snacks can be taken in The Drawing Rooms whilst The Terrace offers al fresco dining in warmer months. The Tethra Spa offers a pool, fitness rooms and extensive list of treatments. Garden wing rooms are in the new wing where care was taken to achieve light and airy rooms with sensitivity to The Merrion's 18th Century heritage. Transfer from Dublin airport: 25 minutes.
