Framed by the gentle slopes of Mount Etna eternally venting its steam toward the heavens and enjoying views of Sicily's dramatic coast, this palatial Leading Hotel of the World is probably the most renowned hotel in Sicily. Located in Taormina, nestled in the citadel's historic heart, the hotel overlooks the sea. A former 15th Century monastery still displaying many original features, the San Domenico Palace is a fabulous hotel in a spectacular setting. Inside are the original vaulted ceilings and ancient cloister. There is an impressive collection of fine art, antique furnishings and beautiful statues. The external sun filled terraces are blooming with sculptured tropical gardens of jasmine, bougainvillea and citrus trees. Enclosed courtyards bordered with arches and columns are shaded and moody, echoing the silence of the monks that once walked here. After dining on regional or international cuisine at the panoramic restaurant Les Bougainvillea or upon the elegant terraces of Principe Cerami relax in the piano or lounge bar. The pool restaurant Giardino Dei Limone is open in the summer months for seafood and Sicilian speciality lunches. Relax by the outdoor heated swimming pool on the lower level of the stepped gardens, or try the fitness centre. The 105 rooms are either in the former convent or the grand hotel wing and feature airconditioning, television and minibar. Those in the convent have been created from the original monk cells and benefit from the historic atmosphere created by the vaulted ceilings and simplistic approach to the décor. Colourful drapes, wrought iron and wooden furniture complement the art that adorns the walls. Standard rooms are each unique and offer views of the cloister or the town. Deluxe rooms have sea views, some with private balcony. Junior suites include a sitting area and terrace, while Seaview suites are luxurious with panoramic views.
