Casa Velha do Palheiro is a former hunting lodge built around 1800. Consisting of three houses, the Casa Velha enjoys a quiet location on this subtropical island. This fine country house hotel displays classicism, elegance and discretion amidst the surrounding legendary luxuriance of Madeira. The island is renowned for its beautiful levada walks and breathtaking scenery. Casa Velha is also ideally situated to explore the island, certainly as near to nature as one can get. Located approximately four miles from the island's capital Funchal, between the golf course of Palheiro where guests receive preferential rates and the gardens of the same name offering superb views. The gardens at Quinta do Palheiro, to which hotel guests have privileged and private access, are famous not only for the variety of plants that grow there but for the beauty of their setting in the hills to the east of Funchal, the capital of Madeira. Madeira has long been called the `Garden Isle' and it seems that almost anything will grow in its fertile soil. Here many tropical plants have found a home and the visitor can see hibiscus and bougainvillaea in flower almost all the year round along with jacaranda, spathodeas, erythrinas and bauhinias in season. Guests at the Casa Velha may enjoy a wide variety of menus presented by the chef and his team who mix traditional Portuguese dishes with culinary expertise, to create an à la carte menu which has already been recognised as one of the finest on the island. Casa Velha has just 37 luxurious rooms providing views over the gardens and golf course. Standard rooms, located in the Garden Wing adjacent to the main building, are spacious and feature a custom built golf bag rack. The charming Deluxe rooms are individual in décor and housed within the `Old House'. Superior rooms are in the New Wing overlooking the golf course and gardens. Junior suites are larger in size with a sitting area and are situated in the Old House offering wonderful views over the gardens and front lawn.
