The popular Spice Trader Tour absorbs all of this and much more, delightful hill stations, tea and spice plantations, tiger reserves and historic cities to name but a few. A highlight is a night aboard a traditional Keralan houseboat drifting slowly through the tropical vegetation of the backwaters, before ending your tour soaking up the sun for a day or two on one of Kerala's beaches.

Cochin: 1 night Munnar: 1 night Periyar: 1 night Kumarakom: 2 nights Houseboat: 1 night Kerala Beach: 3 nights I Day 1 Fly Etihad Airways from London via Abu Dhabi to Cochin. I Day 2 Arrive Cochin, meet your local guide and transfer to your hotel in Cochin to freshen up before an afternoon city tour of Cochin, reputed to be the oldest European settlement in India. Your leisurely tour includes the Dutch Palace, the Jew Town, Mattancherry Palace and St. Francis church, as well as a stroll around the historic Fort Cochin harbour area and a stop to view the immense Chinese fishing nets. In the evening relax or take an optional visit to a traditional Kathakali dance show or enjoy a fascinating cookery demonstration followed by dinner. I Day 3 Drive up through the Cardamom hills to the old hill station of Munnar with a visit to a working tea plantation en route. (approx. 82 miles). Arrive at your chosen hotel for a one nights stay. B. I Day 4 After breakfast drive to the wildlife reserve of Lake Periyar through some of India's most stunning scenery. Here rolling hillsides are covered with tea, spice and rubber plantations, occasionally interrupted by the rushing of a steam or cascading of a waterfall. Arrive at your hotel for a one night stay and choose to relax in the grounds in the afternoon or alternatively enjoy an optional visit to a local spice plantation followed by a colourful spice market (80 miles). B. I Day 5 Enjoy a leisurely cruise on Lake Periyar within the Periyar National Park, a renowned `Project Tiger' reserve and spot perhaps Indian elephants, bison and wonderful exotic birds. Afternoon drive to Kavanatingara where a boat trip on Lake Vembanad takes you to your hotel in Kumarakom. Relax in your peaceful hotel surrounds or take an optional bird watching tour with a local enthusiast. Overnight at your chosen hotel for two nights (approx. 90 miles). B. I Day 6 A day to relax by the pool and a chance to try yoga, meditation or one of the rejuvenating and famous Ayurvedic massages for which the area is famous. Alternatively avail yourself of a number of optional recreational activities on Lake Vembanad. B.

in Cochin Day 2 to departure from Alleppey Day 8 by a local English speaking guide in an airconditioned vehicle. Extensions to the main tour are on an unescorted basis, however assistance will be available from our local representatives throughout.
I Day 7 Time for a swim after breakfast before boarding your private Keralan houseboat. Known as a Kettuvallum, each thatch-roofed boat has been converted from an original cargo boat, complete with one or two bedrooms, en suite basin and wc, a separate kitchen and sit-out area. A three strong crew cater for all your meals and peacefully glide your boat along the labyrinthine network of lakes and canals that dissect the lush paddy fields, coconut groves and the occasional rustic dwellings that constitute the centuries old way of life on the Keralan backwaters. Dinner and overnight on board. B,L,D. I Day 8 Sail slowly to Alleppey then transfer by road to the Estuary Island hotel in Poovar (standard tour) or the Kempinski Leela Kovalam (superior tour) for three nights or more. You may select an alternative hotel from our Keralan collection on p71-73. After your fascinating tour of Kerala's rich natural and historical beauty, now spend time relaxing on the pristine shores of the Arabian Sea, framed by a picturesque backdrop of coconut groves and tropical landscapes.
