The most magnificent of Ramses' statues, faces the sun so that on the birthday of Ramses the sun's rays strike through the temple to fall on the forehead of the seated Pharaoh inside. The incredible feature of Abu Simbel is that the temples were originally built on the river bank. With the construction of the Aswan High Dam the water level rose and the temples would have been lost if it were not for the UNESCO project to resurrect the temples above the new high water level.
