madagascar The world's fourth largest island is one of amazing contrasts in both landscapes and cultures, and home to a diverse mix of African, Arabic, Indian and European influences. This brand new tour takes in stunning landscapes of forests, lakes and rice terraces which are home to many endemic species including the ring tailed lemur. Transport is by 4x4 car or minibus and accommodation is typically of a simple medium class standard. I Day 2 Sun On arrival in the island's capital of Antananarivo you will be met and transferred to the IC Inn hotel for one night. I Day 3 Mon After breakfast proceed to the airport for a short domestic flight to Toliaro on the south west coast of the island. Here you will meet your guide and transfer to Ifaty, a fisherman's village approx 17 miles north. Time permitting, in the afternoon visit the Reniala Reserve and its amazing baobab forest. These iconic trees are known to grow for thousands of years and have a regal majesty about them. Overnight at the Le Paradisier Hotel in Ifaty. B,D. I Day 4 Tue Travel northwards inland towards Ranohira passing through the typical savannah and bush landscapes of the southern part of the island, as well as villages of sapphire miners and painted tombs of the southern tribe of Madagascar. Ranohira is a tiny village on the edge of the Isalo mountain range where in the afternoon you will embark on an hour's walk in the clean mountain air to the `Piscine Naturelle De L'Isalo', a natural swimming pool fed by a mini waterfall. Swimming is optional! Dinner and overnight at Isalo Ranch. B,D. I Day 5 Wed Continue north after breakfast, passing the `Bishop's Hat' rock formation before stopping at Anja, a protected lemur park where you may spot the rare and beautiful ring tailed lemur. Afterwards visit the small village of Ambalavao, famous locally for it's wines and the paper factory you will visit, with lunch en route. Suitably refreshed, continue to Fianarantsoa, where the landscape changes to terraced rice fields and highland villages. Dinner and overnight at Tsara Guest House hotel. B,L,D. I Day 6 Thu A morning city tour of Fianarantsoa, the largest town in the south of the island, the country's catholic centre so home to many churches and capital of the Betsileo tribe. Continue through the highlands with lunch en route, a visit to Ambositra, known for it's wood carvings and native handicraft, before arriving in Antsirabe. Rest of the day is at leisure and overnight at Thermes Hotel. B,L,D. I Day 7 Fri Time to explore the town this morning, set in the middle of a fertile volcanic plain, surrounded by mountains, and known for it's rickshaws, gemstones, fresh produce and mineral water. Then onto the capital Antananarivo for a lunch stop before visiting Mantasoa, a quiet village approx 40miles east of the city and home to the ruins of the island's first industry complex built by the French in the 1830's. Overnight at Riverside hotel. B,L,D. I Day 8 Sat After an early breakfast drive to Andasibe and visit the Analamazaotra National Park to discover the singing lemur, `Indri Indri'. Lunch is followed by the chance to see a population of tame lemurs in a private reserve, before returning to the capital for dinner and overnight in the centre of town at Tana Plaza hotel. B,L,D. I Day 9 Sun A short domestic flight this morning to Antsiranana on the northern tip of this huge island, followed by a city tour and lunch. Continue to Joffre Ville, historically a rest and relaxation destination for French soldiers and now gateway to the Amber Mountain National Park. Dinner and overnight at Nature Lodge Hotel, your base for two nights.
