I Day 2 Mon Transfer to the Santiago Sheraton. In the afternoon a short tour to introduce you to this cosmopolitan city backed by the might Andean mountain range is included. B. I Day 3 Tue At leisure to explore the city or take our optional excursion to the well regarded Concha y Toro vineyard in the Maipo Valley (see p450 for details). B. I Day 4 Wed to Day 6 Fri Fly LAN Chile south to the town of Punta Arenas, situated overlooking the Magellan strait. Continue by road to Puerto Natales, gateway to the Torres del Paine National Park about 70 miles north. The next three nights are spent at the Remota lodge, designed in a unique style with spectacular views over the Sound of Last Hope. The lodge has a restaurant serving excellent food with an emphasis on fresh local produce and there is also a swimming pool, sauna and open-air hot-tub. During your time here you may choose from a wide range of excursions around Puerto Natales and into the Torres del Paine National park, famed for the three granite towers after which the park is named ­ including boat journeys through the fjords, hikes, cycle rides and horse riding. ALL. I Day 7 Sat Return by road to Punta Arenas and board your expedition cruise ship, the first class Mare Australis. After a welcome cocktail, set sail and depart into the strait of Magellan for an incredible cruise through the remote southern end of Patagonia to the island of Tierra del Fuego (literally the Land of Fire). Cruising offers a chance to see this remote area in a way that would be impossible by land, sailing past astounding scenery with blue glaciers, snow capped mountains and pine forests. ALL. I Day 8 Sun Navigate through the Almirantazgo Inlet, landing near the Marinelli Glacier in Ainsworth Bay, where on the beach you can observe a colony of Elephant Seals. Continuing the voyage, visit Tucker Islet, where you transfer to smaller zodiac boats to view the colonies of Magellanic penguins and Cormorants. ALL. I Day 9 Mon Navigate the main part of the Beagle Channel with fantastic views of the surrounding mountains as you continue through the majestic Glacier Alley. ALL. I Day 10 Tue Sail through the Murray Channel to Cape Horn National Park. Disembark and walk to the monument which marks the point where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans merge and is the most southerly point of the South American continent. ALL. I Day 11 Wed to Day 12 Thu Alight at the Argentine city of Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. Two nights at Los Yamanas hotel located just outside of the city with views over the Beagle Channel. B. I Day 13 Fri to Day 14 Sat Fly north to Argentina's capital Buenos Aires for two nights at the Emperador hotel. Known as the Paris of the Americas, its elegant buildings and excellent restaurants give the city an almost European feel. Alternatively fly to Colalate for two nights before continuing to Buenos Aires. B.
