Driving in France in winter is normally problem-free and roads should be clear of snow until you reach resort. French road signs generally indicate towns rather than road numbers, making it easier to plan your route by looking at the towns you'll be passing through. Tolls are payable on French motorways (by either cash or credit card). Motorway tolls from Calais to resorts in the Alps will be in the region of e50-e70 and a little more if travelling to the Pyrenees. Visit www.viamichelin.co.uk for an excellent route planner giving mileage and approximate journey times, as well as toll costs for your journey. As a handy guide, we have listed approximate mileage from Calais to each of our resorts.
USEFUL TRAVEL InFoRmATIon bEFoRE yoU Go
If you are a UK resident, you are entitled to any medical treatment (under a State scheme) that becomes necessary, at reduced cost or sometimes free, when temporarily visiting a European Union (EU) country. Please remember that for many things you will have to pay first and then claim the money back. To obtain treatment you will need a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which has replaced the E111. Apply for one online at www.ehic.org.uk or by calling 0845 606 2030 or by picking up an application form from the Post Office. Before applying for an EHIC it is advisable to have read the information in the Health Advice for Travellers booklet, which you can also obtain from all the sources above. 6
