Western India
Western India is famous for its textiles, crafts, and cultural and social diversity. This trip explores the states of Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Gujarat, and we visit embroiderers, weavers and organic cotton farmers, some of whom have been working with Traidcraft for over 15 years. We begin in Mumbai, the commercial capital of India, home to some of Asias largest slums where we will see both sides of this complex city. Jaipur and the Taj Mahal are just some of the other highlights of the tour.

I i i h It aims to increase the net earnings of farmers and assist them with market support as they develop sustainable agricultural practices. It has links with various research organisations and NGOs involved in water management work and other similar initiatives. Support from Traidcraft plc and Traidcraft Exchange has enabled Agrocel to enter and grow within the fair trade market, which now accounts for a key proportion of its sales.

In 1954, a group of Dominican nuns arrived in Ahmedabad to start a hospital. Ahmedabad was an industrial city, producing textiles, but when the mills began to close many men lost their jobs and women became the sole earners. As a result, the nuns organised a sewing and embroidery centre, where women use traditional skills to make handicrafts. Traidcraft has been working with St Marys for 22 years.
