Arriving in Naples, you'll have an opportunity to delve into this ancient city's old town before continuing to Pompeii to stop for two nights. Visit the doomed city itself and tour the local archaeological museum to see more relics from the days when it was a thriving Roman settlement. A trek to the peak of Mount Vesuvius is also in order, to see the still-active volcano that looms above the region. Then it's across to coastal Sorrento, for stunning clifftop views and a chance to catch the ferry to Capri or the other local islands. Move on along the famed Amalfi Coast for the last, but not least, stage of the tour, hiking past age-old villages and through picturesque vineyards and olive groves. Day 1 Arrive in the Eternal City and check into your centrally located Rome hotel. Meet your tour leader for a welcome briefing to learn more about the coming week. Days 2-3 Leave Rome and head south to Naples for an afternoon exploring the city. Continue to Pompeii to your hotel base for the next two nights. While here you'll have an opportunity to visit the Archaeological Museum to marvel at the many artefacts recovered from the ancient settlement. You'll see the city itself, frozen in time from when it was destroyed by the fateful eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Day 4 No trip to the region would be a complete without a trek up stillactive Vesuvius to get up close to the crater's edge. After the hike the tour moves on to stay in the charming town of Sant' Agnello, just on the outskirts of Sorrento. Day 5 Free day in and around Sorrento. You could take the ferry to Capri, return to Naples by boat for the day, or explore some of the nearby islands. Sorrento, with its famous clifftop views, is well worth exploring. In the afternoon you'll have time to discover the towns of Amalfi and Positano or spend time by the beach. Day 7 Set off for a half-day hike. Take trails through vineyards, forest, olive groves and age-old villages to arrive at breathtaking sea views. Day 8 Check out from your hotel at the end of the tour.
