Mirina LEMNOS, GREECE - GO EXPLORING Classical sites Charming villages Venetian architecture Cruising on a traditional Caique boat Traditional craft and folklore A fifteen minute stroll from Portomyrina Palace lies Mirina, the capital of Lemnos. Built in the 12th or 13th Century BC, Mirina is dominated by an impressive Venetian castle. The headland and castle straddles the two bays of Mirina, belonging to the town's Greek and Turkish quarters. Today the only permanent inhabitants of the fortress are wild deer, introduced to the village in 1970 from Rhodes. There are plenty of charming shops to browse - look out for classical pottery and wood carvings, local woven fabrics and embroidery - the traditional folk art of the island. The island offers several classical sites, including the most ancient Neolithic colonisation in the Aegean the city of Poliochni, where excavations have revealed a close relationship with the ancient city of Troy. Exploration by mountain bike or hire car is highly recommended. Travel inland and the interior is untouched by tourism. Here you will find many lovely villages full of character and a warm welcome from the local people. 72
