DAY 3 Bordeaux Admire the rugged beauty of the Atlantic coastline on the approach to this important port overlooking the Garonne river. Bordeaux enjoys a fascinating history and is considered by many experts to be the red wine capital of the world. Taste such fine vintages as Lafite, Mouton Latour, Pomerol and Graves produced by the regions famous chateaux. A walking tour of the delightful Old Quarter, a recently declared UNESCO World Heritage Site, reveals the lovely 18th century architecture, as we admire the splendid Grand Theatre, the Place de la Bourse, the former royal palace and the stunning Eglise Notre Dame. DAY 4 Bilbao A major sea port and the largest city of the Basque Country in northern Spain, Bilbao is undergoing a spectacular transformation centred around the metro system designed by Sir Norman Foster; and the futuristic Guggenheim Museum. New landmarks include the Zubizuri Bridge, Euskalduna Concert Hall and Convention Centre and the refurbished Fine Arts Museum. Gastronomy is an art, not least the pintxos or appetisers. Wander through the narrow streets of the Old Quarter and be sure not to miss the Gothic Cathedral of Santiago, the Bridge and Church of San Anton and ITINERARY DAY 1 Thursday 28 August Southampton Join the ship for our 1700 departure. the Plaza Nueva. Shop for antiques, ceramics, and the latest fashions, before lingering over exquisite cakes, pastries and perhaps sip a glass of the delicious Rioja in a traditional bodega. Fascinating shore excursions provide a wonderful insight into the rich heritage of the city. DAY 5 Cruising Enjoy the on-board facilities as we head towards Oporto. DAY 6 Oporto (Lexioes) Classified in the UNESCO World Heritage list, Oporto is an important city in northern Portugal, not least for lending its name to the famous wine. This lovely city is home to many beautiful buildings, ranging from Baroque towers to gothic churches. A visit to the wine cellars to taste the local Port is a must for any visitor! There are opportunities to tour the wine valleys and ancient towns of the Douro; visit the charming province of Minho; also explore Oporto and embark on a riverboat to catch a glimpse of the port wine capital of the world from the river. DAY 7 La Coruna Picasso chose to live in La Coruna, surrounded by the natural beauty of Galicia in Spains northwest corner and there are many reminders of the great painter. Wander through the historic town centre and watch out for the galleries, houses built by fishermen out of wood and glass, where the windows reflect sunlight. Visit the nearby Castle of San Anton and the Tower of Hercules built by the Romans and the only lighthouse in the world of its kind which is still operating. Enjoy the rich cultural legacy of the great historic ports of France, Spain and Portugal, contrasted with spectacular modernism.
