Guest speaker DR BERNARD ROWLANDS MA, PHD., DIP.ED - EARTH SCIENTIST Bernard Rowlands was educated at the University of Liverpool and is an expert in glaciation and has travelled extensively leading parties particularly in Norway, Iceland, Greenland, the Faroes and in the Inner and Outer Hebrides. He has lectured on many cruise ships and his other interests include wildlife, natural optical phenomena and Viking history. DAY 8 Longyearbyen & the Magdalenafjord Today is sure to be the highlight of your cruise as we reach Spitzbergen. Here, we gain an insight into how communities survive in incredibly remote conditions with 24 hours of darkness in the winter and 24 hours of daylight in the summer. The Norwegian town of Longyearbyen nestles between the mountains and the edge of the Isfjord. Tonight we cruise the stunning Magdalenafjord this sheltered inner harbour is considered to be one of Spitzbergens most scenic and the summers continuous daylight will allow us to enjoy this aweinspiring sight at its best. DAY 9 Ny Alesund On the western edge of Spitzbergen, Ny Alesund is a haven for wildlife and an important centre for scientists and environmentalists. Look out for graceful Svalbard reindeer, small ringed seals and some of the several hundred thousand birds that make their nests in the region. DAY 10 Cruising Watch out for whales as we cruise south to Norway. DAY 11 Tromso The attractive city of Tromso was once the headquarters of the seal and walrus hunters and the starting point for several Arctic expeditions. Today, the town boasts a mixture of traditional wooden houses and modern 20th century architecture. Shore excursions include a crosscountry trip to a husky camp and a visit to the incredible Arctic Cathedral. DAY 12 Lofoten Islands Wonderful scenery of jagged mountain peaks, precipitous cliffs and deep fjords awaits us in the Lofoten Islands and our port of call, Leknes on the island of Vestvagoy. DAY 13 Cruising Look forward to the beauty of the fjords whilst relaxing on board. Visit the Bryggen, the Hanseatic quarter of the city, where colourful wooden gabled warehouses, narrow alleys and a fascinating museum can all be found.
