ITINERARY DAY 1 UK/Rome Fly to Rome and transfer to your hotel in the charming unspoilt town of Trevi, surrounded by silvery olive groves in the heart of this beautiful region, for a seven-night stay. There is so much to see in Umbria that we have included excursions each day during your stay, but the pace is relaxed and there will also be free time on Days 5, 6 and 7 to explore Trevi itself. You may also wish to visit the Museum of Modern Art, which has been arranged for you free of charge. DAY 2 Todi & Orvieto This morning we visit the Umbrian town of Todi, with its beautiful main square, often used as a film set. Surrounding the Piazza are the striking 11th-century cathedral and several stunning Palazzos, which we take time to admire. We then continue to Orvieto, an ancient town in an eagle's nest setting atop a volcanic out crop. The town is famous for its gothic cathedral, one of Italy's finest, and its fine, light white wine. DAY 3 Montefalco & Olive Frantoia Look forward to a day of gastronomic delights on today's included excursion. Montefalco is an intimate and charming mediaeval town overlooking the beautiful Vale of Spoleto. We enjoy a walk through the town, which is centred around the pretty semi-circular Piazza del Commune, and houses powerful frescoes depicting the life of St Francis in the former San Francesco Church. Later we indulge in a tasting of the robust blackberryflavoured local wines, accompanied by delicious local cheese and salamis. Our culinary exploration continues this afternoon at a frantoia, a working olive press. A brief introduction to the oil making process is followed by a tasting and there's even an olive museum! Perhaps work up an appetite for dinner this evening with a gentle stroll along the trails that wind through the olive groves surrounding Trevi. DAY 4 Assisi Today's included excursion takes us to Assisi, the jewel of Umbria. Nestled beneath the slopes of Mount Subasio are streets of muted pink stone buildings, splashed with colour from geranium-filled window boxes, and crowned by the famous basilica. This ambitious building, actually two churches on top of each other, is a true celebration of 13th- and 14thcentury art, decorated with renowned frescoes by Cimabue and Giotto. You'll also have some free time to explore Assisi itself. Seek out the Piazza del Commune for a spot of peoplewatching in one of the cafes or enjoy a stroll amongst the quiet back streets, steep narrow alleys and tiny shady squares. DAY 5 Spoleto Spoleto is today's destination, a delightful hilltown perhaps best known for the Ponte delle Tori. This superb mediaeval bridge dramatically and gracefully spans the gorge in ten arches, each over 250 feet high. The town also boasts a Roman theatre, a number of fine museums and San Salvatore, one of the oldest churches in the country, little changed since the 4th or 5th century.
