Every year, the French city of Nice stands still for the all-important Nice Carnival, which takes over the city with its spectacular displays. The Menton Lemon Festival has a similar effect, with its glorious floats made almost entirely of fruit, and firework displays. DAYS 2 5 Menton We have four days to enjoy our surroundings with five included excursions. Included excursions: Monaco & Monte Carlo (half day) The streets of Monaco are instantly recognisable, and it is well known as a playground of the rich and famous. Menton Lemon Festival As night falls, the Promenade du Soleil in Menton comes alive with the Jardins de Lumiere spectacle incredible displays and magical sounds. Nice Carnival (full day) The theme for 2009 is King of Masquerades. The Parade can be enjoyed from your own designated seat as flower-covered floats parade along the Promenade des Anglais. Cannes & Antibes (full day) We visit Cannes, which developed from a small fishing village into a fashionable resort and today it is renowned the world over for its film festival. We continue to Antibes, perhaps the most exclusive resort on the Cote d'Azur. The Provencal Villages (full day) This excursion takes us to the mediaeval resort of St Paul de Vence. Set behind almost intact ramparts that were once one of the favourite subjects of Matisse, the town sums up Provencal life at its best. We also see the village of Eze, which appears to cling in dramatic fashion to the cliffs around it. DAY 6 Menton/UK We return to the airport for our homeward flight. DAY 6 Cannes & Antibes Located on the shores of La Napoule Bay, Cannes developed from a small fishing village into a fashionable resort for poets, writers and the English aristocracy during the 19th century. Today it is renowned the world over for its film festival. Take the time to stroll along La Croisette, the palmtree-lined boulevard that runs along the seafront, top hotels on one side and private beaches on the other. Our included excursion also visits Antibes, perhaps the most exclusive resort on the Cote d'Azur and a favourite with the extremely wealthy. DAY 7 Les Gorges de Loup & Gourdon Our optional excursion takes us into the steep, fantastical cliffs of Les Gorges de Loup, a scenic valley of river gorges cooled by dramatic waterfalls and dotted with ancient towns. We visit Gourdon, built around a 2.500foot-high rocky outcrop a lovely place to stop awhile and browse in the charming shops. DAY 8 Menton/UK Today we transfer to the airport for our homeward flight. YOUR HOTEL Hotel Mediterranee (3-star), 7 nights (3 nights half board, 4 nights bed and breakfast). Located right in the centre of Menton and just a few steps from the lovely old town, this recently refurbished hotel has a restaurant and sun terrace.
