Visit sophisticated Auckland; marvel at the volcanic landscape of Rotorua and the splendour of South Island's mountains and glaciers; and discover Maori culture. ITINERARY DAYS 1 & 2 UK/Hong Kong We fly overnight to Hong Kong, arriving on Day 2. We then transfer to our city centre hotel for a two-night stay. DAY 3 Hong Kong Hong Kong is one of the most exciting cities in the world and we include a halfday city tour. The afternoon is free to take in the breathtaking panoramic views across the city from Victoria Peak; visit colourful Stanley Market to browse and haggle for bargains; or call in at the famous floating community of Aberdeen. DAYS 4 & 5 Hong Kong/Auckland Today is free for you to discover more of Hong Kong. This evening we transfer to the airport for our overnight flight to Auckland, where we stay for three nights. DAY 6 Auckland We discover the beauty of Auckland on a city tour taking us from the waterfront to the volcanic peak of Mount Eden for a panoramic overview, including visits to Kelly Tarlton's Antarctic Encounter and Underwater World, and the Auckland Museum for an introduction to Maori culture. DAY 7 Auckland Relax today or explore more of the city independently; perhaps take the ferry across to Devonport or ascend the Sky Tower for an overview of the city. DAY 8 Rotorua We journey to Rotorua, passing through Hamilton and Waitomo, where we see the incredible Glow-Worm Caves, underground caverns illuminated by thousands of glow-worms. At Rotorua's Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve the landscape takes on a surreal quality, with volcanic pools of bubbling mud, thermal springs and shooting geysers. We spend two nights in Rotorua. DAY 9 Rotorua A fascinating and colourful insight into Maori culture and more geo-thermal wonders await at the Maori Arts & Crafts Institute in Te Puia before we visit Rainbow Springs Nature Park. Here we can see the native kiwi bird. We continue to the Agrodome to witness a sheep shearing demonstration. This evening we savour a traditional Hangi, a Maori feast and concert. DAY 10 Wellington Today we travel south to Wellington, taking in the wonderful contrasts of North Island's scenery: the exploding' Waiotapu mud pool, the fragrant pine forests of Wairakei Valley, thundering Huka Falls and lovely Lake Taupo, surrounded by volcanic peaks. We continue along the Desert Road beside the mountains of central North Island to the capital, Wellington, for an overnight stay. DAY 11 Christchurch Cruise across the Cook Strait to South Island, where it's all aboard the Tranz-Coastal Railway for a scenic journey south along the Pacific Coast, passing the Kaikoura Mountains en route to Christchurch, our base for the next two nights. DAY 12 Christchurch With its manicured parks and gardens, Gothic architecture and meandering River Avon, Christchurch has a distinctly English feel about it. See the highlights on a morning tour, including the craft market at the Arts Centre.
