ATLANTIC TO THE MEDITERRANEAN The French Wine Trail from Alsace to Burgundy 9 days from £799 Strasbourg Beaune · Travel by train · Includes a visit to Mulhouse Car Museum · Experience 3 French wine regions · Comprehensive programme of included and optional excursions From the Vosges mountains of Alsace to the undulating countryside of Burgundy we discover historic cities, mediaeval villages, imposing abbeys and hillside fortresses. Staying in Strasbourg, Besancon and Beaune, we sample some of the regions' finest wines along the way. ITINERARY DAY 1 UK/Strasbourg We depart London St Pancras or Ebbsfleet this morning by Eurostar to Paris, where we connect with the high-speed TGV service to Strasbourg. First Class travel can be arranged please see supplements. On arrival we take the short transfer from Strasbourg station to our hotel, where we stay for four nights. DAY 2 Strasbourg After breakfast we enjoy a guided walking tour of this fascinating city and the afternoon is free to make your own discoveries. A highlight is sure to be the magnificent Notre-Dame Cathedral, known for its fine stained glass windows. Perhaps climb to the top of the spire for a bird's eye view of the city, and be sure to see the Astronomical Clock strike midday. Opposite the cathedral is the 18th-century Chateau des Rohans, now home to two art galleries; while nearby is the Pharmacie du Cerf, believed to be the oldest pharmacy in France, dating back to the 13th century. Strasbourg's old quarter, encircled by the River Ill, is a delightful place to stroll. Tall, half-timbered houses line the quays, while tempting restaurants and bars are the ideal place to linger awhile. An optional boat trip along the river will be available it's a delightful way to see the city. This evening we have included dinner in a traditional Alsace restaurant. DAY 3 Colmar & Kaysersberg Our optional excursion takes us to the fortified market town of Colmar, home of sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, the creator of the Statue of Liberty. There will be a guided tour and some free time before we continue to the imperial town of Kaysersberg, the birthplace of theologian and philosopher, Albert Schweitzer. Renowned as one of the prettiest towns on the Alsace Wine Road it is surrounded by vines and an impressive 12th-century hillside fortress, built by the emperors who once ruled this region. DAY 4 The Alsace Wine Road Our fascinating fullday excursion takes us along the Alsace Wine Road, a beautiful region of rolling vineyards, rugged mountains and charming towns. Our first stop is the mediaeval town of Ribeauville, dominated by the ruins of three fortified castles, built by the Seigneurs de Ribeaupierre. We continue to Riquewihr in the heart of the Alsatian vineyards. Virtually unchanged since the 16th century, it is renowned as one of the most beautiful towns in France, with narrow lanes, timber-framed houses and an air of the past at every twist and turn. We end the day with a tasting of the regional wines in the cellars at Zellenberg.
