ITINERARY DAY 1 UK/Ericeira We fly to Lisbon and transfer to our hotel in Ericeira, one of the most beautiful coastal villages in Portugal. DAYS 2 � 7 OR 14 Ericeira Perched on a rocky ledge over a series of lovely sandy beaches, Ericeira is a delightful village and fishing port. Take a stroll through the narrow streets of whitewashed houses to the Praca de Republica, a pretty square lined with tempting cafes and pastry shops; and make sure you try out the local delicacy of lobster in one of the town's excellent restaurants. During your stay we have a full programme of excursions to some of the region's highlights. Included excursion: Lisbon (full day) Our sightseeing takes us to the delightful Alfama district, an ancient Moorish quarter of narrow, cobblestoned street and picturesque houses; and to the riverside quarter of Belem, site of the Jeronimos Monastery and Monument to the Discoveries. There will also be some free time to explore at leisure. Optional excursions: Sintra, Cascais & Cabo da Roca (full day) We visit the hilltop town of Sintra and the National Palace, the summer residence of the Kings of Portugal, before heading back to the coast and Cascais, which boasts a wonderful bay lined with elegant early 20thcentury houses. We end the day at the Cabo da Roca lighthouse, the most westerly point in Europe. Mafra & Queluz (full day) Originally designed for just 13 friars, the monastery at Mafra grew into a massive and wealthy palace complex, complete with a basilica, royal residence and monastic quarters for some 450 monks and novices. Highlights are the magnificent Rococo library and the marble floors, which reflect the designs of the ceilings. We continue to the Palace of Queluz, an elegant rococo structure surrounded by wonderful 18th-century formal gardens. Obidos, Alcobaca & Nazare (full day) We explore the cobbled streets and whitewashed houses of Obidos, a mediaeval city whose golden towers, crenellated battlements and ramparts afford wonderful views of the rolling hills of Estremadura. We continue to Alcobaca to visit the Cistercian monastery; and the traditional fishing village of Nazare. Coimbra (full day) Once the capital of Portugal, Coimbra is known for its university. Founded in 1290, it is the oldest and one of the most prestigious in the country and provides the town with many of its fine buildings, including a superb library. The labyrinth of narrow alleys and stepped streets are a delight to explore on foot. DAY 8 OR 15 Ericeira/UK We return to the airport for the homeward flight.
