Based in the enchanting and picturesque lakeside resort of Lucerne, this relaxing holiday allows plenty of time to explore the best of Switzerland's magnificent alpine scenery.
ITINERARY DAY 1 UK/Lucerne We fly to Zurich, meet our Tour Guide and transfer to Lucerne and the hotel on the shores of the lake for our five-night stay. DAYS 2 5 Lucerne We have four days to relax and enjoy this captivating Swiss resort. It's a joy to stroll around the colourful streets and pause for a drink in one of the welcoming cafes. Highlights of the city include the distinctive wooden bridge that spans the River Reuss; the mediaeval market square lined with intricately painted houses, and the ornate churches of the Old Town. The transport system in Switzerland is second to none, so why not take advantage of the pre-bookable Swiss Tour Pass to help you explore the surrounding area? Here are just a few suggestions of places to visit: Four Forest Canton Lake Cruise the full length of Lake Lucerne with its breathtaking scenery of green meadows, orchards, sheer cliffs and steep-roofed farmhouses. Vitznau & Mount Rigi Summit Take the lake cruiser to Vitznau and join the Mount Rigi cog railway for an exhilarating journey up to the 1,752 metre summit for panoramic views of the Alps. Alpnach, the Pilatus Summit & Kriens Cruise to Alpnach, then board the mountain train to the summit of Mount Pilatus. It's a thrilling journey aboard the world's steepest cog railway, with gradients of up to 48% and views of flower-studded meadows, waterfalls, curious rock formations and countless alpine peaks. From here, take the cable car down to Kriens and the local bus back to Lucerne. Brienz & the Rothorn Summit Travel by train to Brienz, an attractive town in the Bernese Oberland renowned for its woodcarving workshops; then join the cog railway to the summit of Mount Rothorn. The train climbs 1,678 metres, navigating six tunnels and two galleries on the way. DAY 6 Lucerne/UK We transfer to Zurich airport for the homeward flight. YOUR HOTEL Grand Hotel Europe (4-star), 5 nights bed and breakfast. This traditional Swiss hotel was built in 1872 on the shores of Lake Lucerne and has offered superior accommodation to holidaymakers ever since. The hotel is set in a beautiful position a 15 minute walk from the town centre. All guest rooms have been recently refurbished in contemporary style. The hotel facilities include a large, graciously furnished dining room, cosy lobby bar, elegant lounges and a spacious terrace with wonderful views of the lake and mountains beyond.
